I've been here a couple times before on work trips to NYC and enjoyed the evening classes, but didn't love how crowded they were. This time, I stayed in Union Square and took a couple of early morning classes. They were quite small 5-7 students and the teachers Dorothy and Catherine were top notch as usual. I highly recommend this if you don't want to have your mat inches away from the person next to you. We were spread out and got plenty of attention from the teachers. Spiritual Warrior is a quicker, hour long version with a little less teaching and chanting, and Jivamukti Open is the same experience. Our of the three studios I visited this week, by far my favorite. The rockin' music, devoted teachers, excellent sequences, and challenging options are unique to this studio. Free mat and towel rental for drop ins, not sure how it works if you have a pass.
The space is pretty good. Spacious which is rare in that part of NYC. I took a class with Rose and while she was very friendly and encouraging, I didn't love the class. Didn't feel challenged at all. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Just not my kind of yoga and the feel wasn't my cup of tea.
Hard to express how much I love these people & how much I've gained from this place over the last 6 years. Jivamukti is a more vigorous style of yoga than than most, a fantastic workout. You get really warmed up and then do deep stretching & strength work. The music, the personality of the teachers add so much to the experience. It feels like a real celebration, but also a spiritual exploration. The teachers take yoga seriously but not themselves. I've gleaned some amazing insights here and have released a lot of sorrow at various points of my life in these classes. So grateful.
Great yoga studio, one of the best in the country, I look forward to visiting each time I'm in NYC. Classes are always wonderful, challenging, and inspiring. They include chanting and meditation. If your yoga is all about the workout, this studio probably isn't for you.
Jiva is the gold standard of yoga training. Many studios have come and gone but Jivamukti is still the place to go if you want a serious practice that incorporates both the physical and spiritual. It's not a place to do just Asana but a community and a family. The teachers are of exceptional quality. Sharon and David have had a positive impact on the lives of 10s if not 100s of thousands of people around they world. Practice yoga! Be happy! Austin is a great addition to the teacher roster. Generous, kind and compassionate, a real teacher who is not afraid to kick butt.
I just had the best tumeric smoothie from the cafe called 'Golden Milk'. This place is a good place to come if you want to get healthy. Cafe, shop, yoga classes, meditations, and talks - what a great place to have right in the city. Happy I found it.
I purchased a 5 class package for $90 on the jivamukti studios own phone app. There is absolutely nothing on the app about a 5 week limit to the package, and no information about that either in the receipt they sent via email. So I ended up using just one class from that package. In the future there should at least be some sort of warning sent to people who purchase the class packages on the app, either in the receipt or in the app itself. I do love the classes here but I really genuinely feel like I was misled into paying $90 for one class and the person I spoke with on the phone at the studio would not help remedy the situation.
I love this place. It's more of a purist yoga school with chanting and meditation practice. Not watered down yoga. They know their stuff here. The classes are always great 1.5 hours long, they are a good workout in addition to stretching.
One of the teachers grabbed my knee as we were doing a pose..said, "you can go further" .pulled on the knee and tore my cartilage...a few years later after two surgeries and lots of accupuncture I am now searching for a knee replacement doctor..back then I was too scared to tell him to get the F off of me and I know that is not "yogi-like" but he changed my life. ..if you read the five star reviews many say, " the best yoga school in NY" which is antithetical to one of yoga's philisophical teachings: no competition....I curse the day I went to "the home of the most pretentious yoga students in NY.."hot yoga" class is for 10's only" a fellow comedian's joke. I regret the day I went to this place.
I'm sure the founders had a life-changing experience with yoga and wanted to share with others. But the Jivamukti yoga center I experience was very rajasic, perhaps typical of NYC centers except for a few gems, and it felt like a pick-up place. I went with a girlfriend of mine, on my way out of the huge class with thumping music and 50 people this guy I partnered for a posture asked me where are we going for dinner...as if it is the natural next thing to do? I looked puzzled and went away. my friend who was waiting for me at the reception area was also asked by another guy sitting there if she'd like to go out for coffee, out of nowhere. It is nice to meet interesting and sociable people, but the vibe that day just didn't feel right.
