John's of Times Square

Story

In 1995, Madeline Castellotti had a vision. Where frightened visitors saw adult shops and violence, Madeline saw potential. It was then when she decided Times Square would be home to the world famous John’s of Times Square. As she walked the Crossroads of the World, she was looking for a location that was as unique as her pizza. After stumbling upon an abandoned church on West 44th Street, where the homeless squatted and spray painted gang signs were apart of the décor, Madeline instantly saw the beauty of this old Gospel Tabernacle Church. During her initial tour of this location, the perfectly intact stained glass ceiling caught her attention. It was made up of 8 parts, all equal in size, just like a pizza pie. It was then that Madeline Castellotti knew this would be home to her dream, the most unique pizzeria in the world.
As a hardworking single mother, Madeline waited until her children were grown to go after her own dreams. Madeline quit her job in Human Resources for a large law firm and put her heart and soul into converting this old church with authentic structure into what she had visualized. After two years of being hands on in this major construction, Madeline’s vision came to light. She had not only constructed the most unique pizzeria, but also the largest pizzeria in the United States.
In June of 1997, John’s of Times Square opened its doors while Times Square was still recreating its image to be what it has become today. Since John’s of Times Square’s grand opening, Times Square has come along way, from streets filled with violence and prostitution, to the world’s most visited location. This unique location has hosted Broadway play openings, award ceremonies, album release parties, and a wedding, just to name a few.
Sadly, Madeline passed away in 2004, and left John’s of Times Square to her daughter. Lisa Castellotti was determined to finish what her mother started and carry out her vision of creating a pizza empire. In 2008, Lisa opened John’s of Times Square’s newest location across the Hudson River in the business district of Jersey City, NJ. John’s is located in the Paulus Hook neighborhood of Jersey City and located 3 blocks from the waterfront. The neighborhood restaurant, with its close proximity to the Jersey City business district, is perfect for business lunches and family dinner.
John’s of Times Square has been voted one of New York’s best pizzas because of its unique characteristics. All pizzas are made to order in one of our four coal-fired brick ovens and like a cast iron pan, our ovens season with age, making no two pizzas the same. The 800 degree coal fired ovens have no thermostats to control heat and are operated by our pizza men who have gone through months of extensive training. We pride ourselves on our fresh ingredients and incomparable recipes, making our pizzas second to none.

"Step back in time to a 19th-century church transformed into a contemporary pizzeria. John's of Times Square offers a unique dining experience, perfectly situated for pre- or post-Broadway show indulgences. Savor our classic New York-style pizzas, crafted with fresh ingredients and baked to perfection in our authentic coal-fired oven. Whether you're with family, friends, or celebrating a special occasion, John's of Times Square provides an unforgettable culinary escape amidst the heart of New York City."

Great location. Good prices. Very pretty pizza-like ceiling & wall decorations - nice place for a picture. We were seated right in the middle . Pretty fast service in peak hour. Pizza was tasty, but not exceptional. Recommendation: a good place for a dinner before a Broadway show
The eggplant parm sandwich had the perfect balance of toasty bread not too soft, not too hard, eggplant, cheese, and sauce. Perfect texture and taste - not sloppy, not dry, just right. I should have taken a better picture before I started eating it! The pizza is really good too. The first time we ate here, the pizza crust was a little soft, but this time, it was perfectly crisp. It takes a little while to get your orders taken, but otherwise, the service was great. Everyone was friendly. Nice quite atmosphere, not super fancy, but a good place to get away from the hustle and noise of the streets around Times Square. Kid-friendliness: Good for kids, not too crowded or over stimulating.
Very nice Italian restaurant near Times Square. The pizza's are enormous, and ideal for sharing. Staff is friendly and helpfull, and not too pushy. From the outside the restaurant looks tiny, but inside the space is enormous. The building is worth visiting for the nice inside decorations. The quality of the food is good.Food: 5/5
No question, John's is my favorite pizza place in Manhattan. It's not the typical counter service pizza joint where you can get a slice and be on your way. Plan to spend some time here, there's usually a wait for a table but it's worth it. Everything I've eaten here has been good, drinks are excellent and the service is friendly. The building is an old church that's been converted to a restaurant which makes for a unique atmosphere.
Strolled over to John's after a Saturday matinee show and had zero wait time. Food was tasty and service was great! Portions are definitely shareable size. Hands down best Caesar salad I've ever hadFood: 5/5
Our server was awesome. Perfect amount of attentiveness. The coldest beer we’ve experienced in NYC. Buffalo pizza had proper Buffalo sauce on it and lots of chicken. If you want to avoid the crowd come for lunch. Not typical NYC style pizza but delicious..Food: 4/5
Cold and old pizza. Service was fast but good was good so maybe they need to slow down and let the food actually heat through. The atmosphere needs a pick me up and some serious deep cleaning.Food: 1/5
We were craving pizza and a place to sit and rest after a long day's walking around. We stopped here on the off-chance and what a gem of a find! The place is clean, the staff are friendly and the pizza chefs are great! My partner and I shared a large pizza and it was plenty between the both of us for a late lunch. The food is fresh and tastes top quality. We'd eat here again for sure. Prices are reasonable for times square too.
This was our first time here due to the recommendation of some friends. We took public transportation all the way from Bayonne, NJ just to come here. We were not disappointed! The calamari and our meat lovers with pineapple pizza were great! Service was great, as was the atmosphere! We will be back when we visit NYC again Food: 5/5
Great authentic NY pizza. Took the bartenders recommendation and ordered the Margherita and added pepperoni and fresh garlic. Unbelievable! Could be one of the best combinations I have ever had.Food: 5/5
