This place is over price on much of it's inventory. This is Manhattan prices in Brooklyn store. You can go walk about two blocks away and find the same product for less. Try it yourself, ask for the price of a gallon of milk and go to the next store around the corner and it's cheaper. Sorry they won't get my money. I don't care how nice the store looks, at these prices who knows how long this store will last. I give them a 2 1/2 star rating due to a nice looking store but don't let that fool you.
It used to be great with hand made fresh salads, bakery, a sushi guy, organic foods and customer service. Quality disappeared with new owners. Overpriced, expired food, unmarked items and now they added a maze like Ikea at the door with a forced bag table. Yes a plastic bucket on the table at the door. The store had no customers including me as I just turned around and went to a convenient convenience store up the street when they demanded my designer shopping bag which had my wallet and phone. There are several nice shops on Bedford and great salads on Union that are clean, quick and easy. It's a high-end neighborhood with lots of choices and many new shops coming to that end of driggs in the new developments just completed. Maybe the next owners will succeed.
As others have noted, they’ve recently instituted an insane policy where everyone is required to leave their bags unattended at the front door. I’m simply not going to risk leaving a backpack with my work laptop at the door so Khim’s doesn’t need to risk having someone pocket a bunch of cilantro without paying for it. As if the low quality produce and constantly grating, static-y music weren’t reasons enough not to go here, I won’t be back until they drop their unreasonable bag policy. There’s no way that any reductions in theft are worth the loss in business I’m sure they’ve suffered recently.
I really liked this shop, but today i was informed that everyone must leave all their bags near the counter due to stealing issues. People carry valuable belongings and documents with them. I have no idea how you can expect us to leave bags/backpaks unattended and by the door they says possesions are being watched by cashiers - i cant imagine how they would remember which bag belongs to whom Wont be going back until this policy is taken back. Shame.
Incredibly overpriced, they reorganize shelves every few months, quality of produce is not great and their level of inventory is unreliable - often have out of stocks. The only advantage is convenience if you live in the area of McCarren it’s the only option if you need something last minute that you can’t get at a Bodega
I can’t believe the checked bag policy. Who is going to walk around a grocery hand carrying all the valuable contents from their purse or backpack. They even made me check a completely empty reuseable shopping bag this place is about to go out of business.
Khim's is both a waste of a supermarket and an unpleasant shopping experience. I'm not sure I've ever seen someone buying more than the two items they desperately need for the meal currently cooking on their stove down the street. Why? For one, this place is overpriced for mediocre quality groceries. But also, because it's so overpriced, their food goes rotten and moldy sitting on the shelves. Lastly, it seems they've resorted to leaving the prices of their stuff mysterious, as only about half the items even have price tags...I guess they're hoping you won't back out of paying $5.99 for a can of lentil soup or $8.99 for four sticks of butter if you're already at the register. Can't wait for this place to shut down so a more competitive market can move in.
They often sell food that’s expired. I didn’t think to check the first time I bought meat from them and was disappointed when I got home. Prices are a little high but I could consider paying more to support a local grocer and not have to wait in line at Whole Foods every time we need one item, but they really shouldn’t be selling expired food.
Do not buy meat from Khim’s. They are likely repackaging old cuts and pushing back the sell-by dates. I came home with some chicken purchased from here that was marked as packaged the day prior. My roommate had previously come down with food poisoning and warned me to check for a sour smell. The chicken was clearly not safe to eat and very obviously had not been originally packaged the day prior.
Good beer selection. Good enough produce. The prepared food is not good. They stock basics like butter, milk, eggs, and bread with no complaint. Store is clean and accessible. Prices are on the expensive side for sure. Staff doesn't really care to help you with anything. Never my first choice for shopping.
