Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas

I called for days before the phone was even answered, and then was placed on hold for over an hour. The lady who finally answered the phone was extremely rude and didn’t even let me explain my situation before cutting me off and telling me they couldn’t help me. I’m a single mom with 2 kids and a small income...Legal Aid is a joke.

Staff Attorney, Trevin Ware, won a difficult case for me against a powerful entity in December 2014. He is astute, dedicated and has an extremely brilliant legal mind.

These lawyers don't take "easy" cases - that is not how legal aid works. They take the most severe cases, usually where violence has occurred. If your case is turned away, its because they have hundreds of other cases walking through the door. There isn't enough attorneys to take all of these cases, so attorneys are forced to take cases where someone is in danger or disabled. They grill you on your finances because they need this information to get you out of paying court fees. Please do your research before posting incorrect information online. this is a wonderful organization, with amazing attorneys who work overtime to help as many people as possible.

They are extremely underfunded and turn many people away. They only take very easy, clear as day cases. For instance they will take a case for a disabled person who lives in a facility that doesn't offer handicap access, etc. But any sort of case where they have to do real work they will refuse. I think it was one of the Supreme Court Justices in Texas that stated the Texas Legal Aid fund is so underfunded that for every eight people that apply, only one gets to be helped and even then they are 'barely assisted'. It's like this because most of the lawyers in Texas are trying to become 'rich'. Just like most of the Doctors in this state. Forget about 'Public Service'. They want Million dollar cases and nothing but. I understand lawyers are to be paid for their craft but I don't understand why its damn near impossible to find an attorney in this state that will help the poor. Also, if you call The Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas they will grill you on your personal finances. They want to know if you have land in your name or a home in your name. I guess if you do they want you to sell it. Even if its the home you live in and the only one you have for your family. You have to be damn near homeless for them to assist you.
