Went there for the first time today and bought a beautiful dry aged porterhouse and some sea scallops. Everything was amazing! Very friendly and helpful staff. We will be coming back soon.
An updated old fashioned butcher and fish monger for today's consumer. They have high end roasts for your next fancy dinner party should you dare to entertain at home.
I recently was at the 2nd Avenue fair and saw Leonards had a tent in front of their store. I bought a crabcake and some cocktail shrimp. I noticed their sign promoting sirloin steaks that were on special and went in to buy two. Went home to pair the seafood and steaks for dinner. The seafood was super fresh and delicious and the steaks tender and full of flavor. Friendly staff , will definitely be back!
Picked up a skirt steak from this place and was really disappointed. It had an extremely unusual mildewy / tap waste taste to it. I also grabbed a container of tomato soup and prepared mashed potatoes. These were okay, but left more to be desired. Both gentlemen who assisted me were extremely polite, which I always appreciate.
For over twenty years of cooking for high net worth clients, these guys were my go to for a one stop supplier of impeccably fresh seafood and highest quality prime dry aged beef, organic poultry, lamb, pork, offal, bones, all with expert butchering available and super fast deliveries. They’d source whatever I needed and even overnighted me product to remote locations. The owners are the grandsons of the founder, they work at the store everyday, and they, and their staff, are an absolute pleasure to deal with. Highest recommendation!
Great local butcher and fishmonger. Great and reliable delivery to the upper east side. I've used them.dozens of times.for private events and they come through every time.
Yes the meat and fish are beautiful. This place is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive. Ridiculously so. I ordered two racks of lamb for Easter. We all know what a rack of lamb is 8 to 10 ribs per rack. Trimmed.....$319 later I walked out the door. $39.95 per pound and according to the woman that checked me out half of that was waste, fat, etc which also I paid $39.95 a pound for. Go down to Eatily to buy meat. You can Uber back and forth and still come out WAY ahead. These guys are a rip off. Hope it tastes like it should for that kind of money.
I can not help but be impressed with Leonard's Market. Wow! Great presentation of seafood in a tight space. All of chicken are from Bill and Evan's and they have the best prime meats! I had the most unique lobster roll for $20 and their lobster's are from Maine . Fun Fact: This is a 3rd generation family business and was lucky to meet Peter Leonard as well
TL:DR Bought sashimi grade fish. The owner is knowledgeable and can tell you where the fish are sourced and exactly when they come in. Good prices and honest staff. Full review: The employee who cut my fish let me know when he had a piece that was a little bigger than I asked for and checked to see if that was okay before packing it. Owner/manager/proprietor is part of the family business. Apparently the place has been open since 1910 with his grandfather. Again he could tell me exactly where he sources different fish and when they came in. Top notch guy. Prices: tuna 30/lb, salmon roughly 18/lb don't exactly remember but it was less than 20, and flounder 25/lb; all sashimi grade. Killer value compared to Roy's Fish and Sushi on 1st and 63rd where almost everything is 40/lb.
This is a classic boutique butcher shop that would be better suited to a Madison Avenue address. There is almost no walk-in traffic since almost all of their orders are by the phone, probably from families on 5th and Park. The service is unrivaled and the fish and meat are very good. They will go the extra mile for you because they are used to servicing the very rich.
