Madame Walker Legacy Center

Story

The Madame C.J. Walker Building houses the Madame Walker Theatre Center in the city of Indianapolis, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It was named after America's first self-made female millionaire, Madam C.J. Walker. As Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991.HistoryWalker began the development of the Walker Building and Theatre prior to her death in 1919. The project was subsequently completed by her daughter A'Lelia Walker and opened to the public in December 1927.The Walker Building, located in the Indiana Avenue Cultural District, was a center of entertainment and business and pride for the city's African American community from the 1920s to the 1950s. During the mid-1950s, the building and its surrounding neighborhood began a gradual decline.By the late 1970 the Walker Building stood nearly abandoned, with only Walker Manufacturing Company remaining housed in the building, and faced demolition. A group of volunteers recognized the structure's history and began a project to preserving the building. After becoming incorporated as the Madame Walker Building Urban Life Center in 1979, the group purchased the building from the Walker Manufacturing Company and began planning for its restoration. In 1982, the organization's articles of incorporation were amended to reflect the organization's new name of Madame Walker Urban Life Center. The not-for-profit organization was founded to reestablish the facility as a center for cultural expression and economic enterprise.

It was an Awesome experience visiting this historical building, the Walker Theatre. Madam CJ Walker is such an inspiration. This building is Amazing and inside is full of history. Can't wait to the Grand Re-Opening!! Especially after the Renovations, you have to see this place! Don't forget to say Hello to Kim and Rodney! Great People!! Great hospitality!!
Didn't get to tour the entire space but the part I did was good. Besides, there was ample parking space which sold it for me. Historic place at a strategic location. With the renovation going on around there, it's a favorite.
I went to the walk and talk to learn about indiana avenue and the black neighborhoods that were in that area. It was really interesting and i'm glad I went.
Attended a concert here. Theater was gorgeous. Parking options are limited but get there early and there will not be an issue. Valet and self parking options. Staff were very friendly.
I really enjoyed this venue during All-Star weekend and the gospel celebration That was there it was beautiful.
Beautiful venue, great historic place.i really enjoyed the hip hop show and the ability to photograph this event was awesome and great lighting
This jewel is situated right outide of downtown Indianapolis. While in town recently, I was fortunate enough to be the last person provided with a tour of this historic masterpiece in it's current form! A special thanks to Mary Kelly " Director of Operations for the impromptu tour! The entire theater building is about to undergo a major renovation in parthership with Indiana University. I look forward to seeing the new reveal!
Beautiful building, right now the road construction is incredibly limiting, it might he easier to Uber here. The event staff was super kind.
