I'm an artist who has been showing at Matrix for... gosh has it been that long?! 6 or 7 years at least! What I love most about the space is that it is so many things. The gallery, absolutely, for a wide variety of quality art work, but also the addition of the Groundworks Print Studios and the individual artists spaces as well. Heck, you can even tango amongst the art if that appeals to you. What's not to like?

I am new to the gallery. I got picked up by Regina, the gallery director, when I brought a piece for the Image NM 2012 show for photography. All of my dealings with her since have been professional and positive. The opening reception for the show was really nice, well-attended and fun. That was my first chance to really look at the work in the gallery as I don't live in Albuquerque. I found the work daring, interesting, various and all presented with care and taste. I am part of a gallery in Taos with ten artists so I know how hard the gallery business is these days. Matrix and New Grounds seem to survive with a lot of hard work and dedication. You couldn't work that hard unless you loved art and artists. I am thrilled to be represented by this gallery. Hope to see you at my solo show there in 2013.

Hmmm. The preceding reviewer must have been there on a bad day indeed! Still, Albuquerque is a difficult town for any gallery or artist, given the economic realities. A review like the one below does the art community in general and the artists showing in the gallery a disservice. I have found my relationship with Matrix Fine Art to be productive and professional. The gallery presents a diversity of work with solo shows each month - each of which require much work to produce and hang. Even on quiet days, there is someone to help with questions and to pull out unhung work. Every gallery-goer has different tastes, and to proclaim the totality of work in any gallery as "mediocre" is grossly unfair. Sour grapes, perhaps? I would recommend giving this, and every gallery, the benefit of personal visits!
