Milk Bar Upper West Side
"Milk Bar is a sweet and occasionally savory shop that's been quietly shaking up the dessert scene since 2008. Bon Appetit magazine called us "one of the most exciting bakeries in the country." But you can literally just call us Milk Bar.Founded by James Beard award-winning pastry chef Christina Tosi, Milk Bar is known for inventing: the Compost Cookie®, layer cakes with unfrosted sides, Cereal Milk™ Soft Serve, Milk Bar Pie the first flip phone and shoulder pads Ok, technically those last two weren't us. It was a cute place, the workers were super nice and enthusiastic! Kind of expensive and I didn’t like the cakes that much…you can only really eat a few bites it like lasts for days it’s just really sweet and heavy. The person I went with said the ice cream was pretty good though just also super sweet and kind of heavy. The slices are cute though
A great experience for sure. Great menu, lovely service. Its a little small but comfy if you dont mind getting close to people. The cake and milkshake were DELICIOUS for sure!!!
This is a hot take but this place really isn’t good. And I wanted to love it after watching the episode of Chef’s Table and seeing all the hype. I’ve tried 2 cakes and 3 cookies from here and everything just has this weird funky taste that doesn’t sit right. It’s all too sweet. The cakes look pretty but they don’t taste nearly as good.
Quick stop in to grab some snacks for a friend I was seeing. The staff was good, not overly friendly but they not rude either. The soft serve was good and I really like the toppings: French toast, cornflakes, etc. The cookies on the counter were so-so. Some of them were a bit hard so I didn’t even finish it.
PARENTS: Yes, it’s all sugar. Yes, there’s a gluten free option. Slices of cake are big enough for two kids or two adults. Most importantly, yes, they service coffee and it’s 50% off after 2pm. Kids can stand at the bar inside and eat their treats. Bring wet wipes!!!! The service here was great! The cashier was patient and helpful and made recommendations that we ended up purchasing. There was no line!! We all know these TikTok places create a buzz… but this one was much calmer.
Food 4/5 Location 5/5 Staff 5/5 Price 4/5 Is it worth a visit - absolutely. Does it live up to the hype it gets - how could it? The cereal milk base is a wonderful idea that became the foundation of a lot of their products, and while it was really good, I don’t think it is the immaculate ice cream that I heard so much about. The cereal milk base gives it a great nutty flavor with a lot of nice subtle complexity and I would love to see them bring that creativity to more flavors like salt and straw does. All of this being said, it is still absolutely worth a visit for that alone but once was enough for me.
Not the cheapest ice cream sundae you can get! But it worth an experience if you have a sweet tooth! Definitely get the cookies! It so delicious and soft. I heard great things about the cakes but haven't tried it yet!
Wow, really hot inside when I went. Like ac broken? And $11 for a slice of cake! That’s a lot, even for NYC. I was only here for a birthday treat for a friend or else I would’ve never paid the price. Don’t think it’s worth it but maybe you love it. Gotta try to find out!
Both the ice cream and shakes are amazing! They have a unique flavor, quite sweet but delicious!
LOVEEE Milkbar! They have some of the best treats we especially love their truffles. We stopped by to try their seasonal Apple cider donut cake we got a slice and Apple cider donut truffles. Both were really good I personally like the cake more, but it was very close. This is probably of my favs along with their original birthday cake flavor. This store location is a bit smaller than others, but they still had a decent amount of goodies here. Pros: - Decent storefront size - A good variety of milkbar products cakes, cookies, truffles, etc - Nice location to pick up some things then head to the park and enjoy! Cons: - Line is likely to be long during busy hours as the store is small and not many people working at the time - No outdoor or indoor seating If this is your first time, try their truffles and a cookie or two! You can’t go wrong unless you don’t like sweets and were dragged here by one of your sweet-toothed friends Wish there was an UES location :/
