The National Liberty Museum invites visitors to celebrate the diversity of the American experience and teaches us how to Live Like A Hero.

Story

Just when you thought you knew everything about Philadelphia, it turns out The City of Brotherly Love has a treasure you may not have uncovered. The National Liberty Museum is known as one of Philly’s hidden gems. The Museum, located in Old City, examines liberty in a whole new way through world-class collections of glass art and innovative exhibits that showcase artists, visionaries and activists who exercise their freedom of expression every day. You’ll find stories of hundreds of heroes, past and present, who have protected and expanded our liberties, including heroes from our own backyard. Most of all, our exhibits will help you reflect on your own experience of freedom and awaken your desire to “LIVE LIKE A HERO.”

In addition to welcoming general visitors, we offer guided tours and workshops for school groups, unique professional development workshops for educators, and an array of exciting evening events for artists, collectors and the everyday Philadelphian. You can even nominate exceptional teachers, students, police offers and firefighters for one of our Hero Awards.

Love this Museum. It is a Museum of ideas not objects. Rather than dwelling on our meritorious past, it focuses on how we can protect our hard won liberties through our daily actions. It could do better at making the ideas concrete. There are interactive displays, but they require the participant to stop and take the time. It needs docents who could encourage and guide participation. This is a great place for guided groups, such as school groups.
A great place to remind ourselves the value of our own freedom. There is a hero in each of us and we need to push each other to do the right thing when our call arrives. Good for 10-years old and older. Pace yourself and always reflect each exhibition with what if you are in their shoes, would you do the right thing. Exhibition items and clearly mark, great art pieces. Allocate 1-hour minimum, preferably after lunch time. Leave the museum feeling highly appreciative of all the heroes that had fought for your freedom. Wear comfortable shoes. Seats and restrooms are available on many floors.
Decided to check out the museum with a couple friends since we're huge David Bowie fans and knew there was an exhibit there. The exhibit was cool, though we expected a bit more. That didn't take away from our experience though. With 3 other floors there was more to see aside from the Starman. The floors are not overwhelming in size but are in emotion in some of the cases. I'm a believer in music being the ultimate love language that we all speak, the "Amplified: Art, music, power" concept is brilliant and relatable. And for you shoppers, they have an adorable gift shop. Go check it out. Admission is also very reasonable.
Inspiring. A wonderful stop. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It’s one of the few places that has a youth ticket for up to 17 years of age making it an affordable stop compared to many of the other sights. It’s a wonderful place for a teen to learn about Liberty and the many heroes in the world. Easy to find- right across the Independence Hall area and near the Museum of American Revolution and Benjamin Franklin Museum. Museum is 4 floors and has interactive exhibits. The exhibits are very well done and there is a lot of information to absorb. The art is awe inspiring. The stories are very inspiring. It’s an excellent endeavor. The story of the founder: Dr. Borowsky is very inspiring too. All in all a great stop- well worth it. You can ask a staff member to ring the bell for you - definitely very cool. There is an art exhibit called La Brega on display: very, very good! Definitely stop by. : So much to learn in an easy to absorb manner.
Visited here on a rainy Sunday and could not have been more impressed. Funny though that a number of people who left reviews here, gave a 1 star review complaining that this place ‘is not a museum’, and that it has nothing to do with the liberty-related history of the neighborhood and Philadelphia. Some also even said the name of the Museum was misleading. I am not sure what to say about their opinions here, but I certainly think they are misplaced. To be clear, this is not a history museum, but it is still an amazing place. Matter of fact, the world would be a better place if every single person went here to see the Truth* exhibit, because if there is any place in the world where someone can see what is truly “truthful”, it is on the walls of this museum, in the Truth* exhibit. Also, the museum founder Irv seemed like an amazing soul, and he lives on in this space. The building is awesome and the staff is welcoming and they are 10 stars out of 5. I would think Irv would be super happy with the way his museum seems to be cared for now. A totally amazing place. Check it out!
My friend and I were just walking around the city to explore the area and accidentally came across this museum. This place does not have an admission fee. We were greatly surprised by what we saw, we were so happy we stumbled upon this place in our way. Every floor focuses on a different theme but in general it is a very uplifting and inspiring place. There are a few great messages behind all the displays about unity and sacrifice. I highly recommend this place to everyone.
Small place, didn't mention that the third floor was closed off, most exhibitions provided very little and relied on name dropping historical figures for its "content". Save your money and go elsewhere.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
