Regardless of its traffic, this NYSC is fairly clean, organized and well kept. There is a sufficient amount of good dumbbells and plates!!
This gym has truly some of the best trainers and good classes. However the ladies room needs an upgrade get rid of the carpet and update the shower stalls. They have the worst customer service. i was charged additional fees without notice and then my membership was raise without notice. I eventually decided to cancel my membership due to their poor customer service from their gym managers.
Terrible place to work out. There is no AC, and the air is so bad, it almost makes you pass out after 5 min time spent. A lot of the machines are not functional. The smell on the second floor is absolutely repulsive, which makes you want to run away even before any attempt to exercise. People at the front desk are generally ok, but not very involved in helping new customers. Picking towels from laundry baskets at the front desk is also kind of cheap, not to mention the sight of piles of dirty towels by the stairs from the locker rooms to the workout section. Don't recommend unless absolutely appealed by location.
This gym is totally insane during peak hours, avoid coming here during popular times. My biggest complaint is the disorganization of free weights. There is a culture of not putting weights where they belong and they don't have any staff making sure weights are in their proper places. The result: weights spread chaotically throughout the facility. They need to hire someone whose only job is to organize free weights. Update 1/3/2019: When I first signed up for this gym I was verbally told that I had a month-to-month membership and that I could cancel whenever I wanted. I signed an electronic signing device. After deciding the quality of the gym does not justify the cost, I decided to cancel. Membership services told me that I could cancel but I had to pay a $100 dollar early termination fee they claim I agreed to a year-long contract and they showed me my digital signature on the contract. I never even saw the contract when I signed up. Avoid these scammers at all cost.
Gym is not clean, equipment is decrepit, it’s way too hot even in January, the layout and design inside is pretty bad as well. The worst part is that NOTHING feels or looks clean, from the floor, free weights, walls, it’s as if the equipment is not wiped down daily or at all. This is just disappointing coming from a gym around the corner that costs much less.
Unfortunately I cancelled my membership because the prices continue to increase without services to match it. Steam rooms don’t function properly, a rat crawled out of the toilet in the ladies restroom downstairs, classes fill up way too fast and I was not benefiting from this gym in any way. The only class I could get into and enjoyed was boxing. Another reason I cancelled my membership is because when I had questions regarding the pricing of my membership I was placed on hold for 20-30 minutes waiting for Ricardo Ortiz to take my calls. He never answers his calls and I was told that he left or was in a meeting or not in his office. I was only able to reach him via email. The customer service at this NYSC City Hall location is non-existent. When I came in to cancel I was not informed of the 45 days it would take to cancel nor was I informed of the “pro-rated amount” would be. I also was not informed that there would be a cancellation fee to which Ricardo Ortiz was very smug about. I will be taking my business to Blink down the street for a fair price and better customer service. This is the worst gym I’ve ever joined. NEVER AGAIN!!!
This is not a trendy, new club. It has few amenities and the equipment needs to be rehabbed , however everything you need if you want to work out, is there. In addition the trainers are great, people are friendly and I would not trade this spot for another. I can also tell you that they have some really great instructors, Zumba on Mondays at 12 is great as is the Wednesday class at 1. Also Donna Clinton who does the spin class at 6:45 AM on Wednesdays is fabulous. She is an adult who knows that yelling in the morning is not the way to do a class.
I would give New York Sports Club a negative rating if I could. The gym at this location is nice, but after I canceled my membership they continually charged my account for another two years! Of course they had no record of my cancellation, I guess if you ever were to cancel with this so called "club" make sure you keep records for yourself cause this "club" will not do anything of a sort and will just keep charging you.
The staff is friendly but the gym is kind of small. There are plenty of cardio machines but there is only one squat rack for those wanting to lift weights. Otherwise it is fine. I wouldn't use this as my primary location as there are better locations close by
*UPDATE: Reunited with the gentleman mentioned below, and we had a friendly exchange about what went down. I really respected his respect, understood his perspective better, and was glad to talk about it. He showed great character, and we shook hands. I had a great rest of training that day. I want to add that the energy and cleanliness in general has clearly improved since days past, and I think it important to put that on the record, too. Good job, NYSC. I see you. Keep up the good work! I started my membership at this location, but find myself only going here when I have to. I'll prefer to extend my commute to better run locations, as the extra time traveling is worth the better workout. Here's why: as a respectful and avid gym-goer, I'm pretty disappointed with the etiquette prevalent at this location. Other members are one thing; them you can't much control- but when the personal trainers themselves don't clean up after themselves, or after their clients, it is a loud sign of laziness, and selfishness, quite frankly. Put your weights away. Pick up after your clients. Respect the gym. This is our home. Unfortunately, this location is fairly congested, so a little mess goes a long way. Thus a big mess goes a very big way. Sometimes, it gets borderline dangerous the way dumbbells are scattered. This, however, prompted my writing this review: the other day, I was working in the TRX area, when I was told by a personal trainer that the entire athletic area is off limits during [insert timeframe here]. Sure it was a little annoying, but I understood he's a PT, and he's about to run a group training session, and he needs the space. As an independent personal trainer myself, I understood and respected his demand. I can always find other exercises to do. What's bothersome is when I take note that during his whole session only three clients showed up, he not once utilized the small space I was working out in. Not even close, quite frankly. It was so clear that we all could've respectfully continued our own workouts, and it was so clear that he blatantly just didn't want to deal with anyone else, that his request for the space seemed like just a power trip. He was hardly paying attention to the clients he was working with anyway, and 90% of the time leaning on equipment like he was bored out of his mind, so all in all, his personality just snowballed into one big mass of a turn off. Then...moments later...another PT came over with a client during the first PT's "private session" and took up more space than I did. If "camaraderie" outranks logic, I don't wanna be right. Perhaps I sound ranty, or like I may be a drama queen, but I'm a really considerate and rational guy. It honestly is an amalgamation of months of putting up with a sub-par ambience, and sub-adequate, spacey training staff. For the record, the managers, cleaning crew, and front desk folk are awesome, and the steam room and other amenities I am very grateful for. That said, I will always hit up another location before this one if I'm able. For a clean gym floor, and a productive environment, I'd recommend a different location. Love the franchise, don't love City Hall. Best, Jacob
