NUI MONO - creative, original fashion made by local women artists. Clothing and jewelry masterfully designed from fabrics and findings worldwide. NUI MONO - a haven for those who seek the unique.
Started in 1978 by mother and daughter team, Elaine Costello and Lue Zimmelman, Nui Mono was one of the first shops in Honolulu to offer original fashion made with Japanese cottons and silks and other ethnic fabrics. From the beginning, Nui Mono's goal was to create clothing inspired by an Asian aesthetic, using only natural fibers. Elaine's skill at mixing textures and colors along with her eye for embellishment soon became well-known and a little shop in a small, off-the-beaten-path neighborhood became a destination for those looking for something unique. In the early eighties, Nui Mono began offering carefully selected accessories, jewelry and gift items from countries all over the world. By the mid-nineties, Nui Mono began carrying the work of some of the best local women artists. That relationship has evolved into what is now known as Nui Mono and Girlfriends--a core group of extremely talented women who call Nui Mono home, most of whom sell their creations exclusively at Nui Mono.
With the recent passing of founder Elaine Costello, the current goal of Nui Mono is to grow and evolve as she hoped it would, to honor her talent, vision, and creativity, and to continue to offer a very special, one-of--kind shopping experience.
