Promise Land Cafe is wonderful. The decor is beautiful, the music is pleasant and appropriate for the atmosphere, the food is delicious, and the owners are lovely people who clearly thought out every detail when creating this delightful restaurant. Great for vegetarians and omnivores, plus a full bar, so bring your friends and family to experience Promise Land.
Amazing food and fantastic service!!! I went with friends to celebrate a birthday. We were greeted by a man who I believe was the owner, very kind. Our waitress way Layla and she was extremely professional and knowledgeable. The food was unbelievable!! After commenting on the fantastic flavor of even the carrots she told us the secrets of flavors. I can not begin to express how impressed I was with this restaurant. From inside decor to service to fantastic food. I give them a 5+
I absolutely love finding hidden gems, and this place was amazing. Every bite was bursting with complex flavor without being overwhelming. The pita bread was fresh and hot. My chicken dish was so tender. I tried my wife's falafel and found it to be authentic, the best I have ever tasted. Service was attentive, friendly, and helpful. The rich decor and Mediterranean music completed the setting. One could easily miss this family-owned place if caught up in the usual daily rush, but I am so glad this was recommended. When I return to Portland, I will definitely return.
You should DEFINITELY visit this restaurant. My neighbor suggested I visit this restaurant several months ago and I finally made it in last night. It is located on MLK just north of Fremont and it's easy to drive by without noticing, but they even offer parking in the back of the restaurant which is pretty unheard of in this area. We were greeted so warmly when we walked in and my concern about us showing up at 8:30 was quickly resolved by the waitress telling us she was so happy we were there and we were most welcome. This is definitely a restaurant being run by family, from the young lady eating at the bar to the bus boy who was quiet and polite to the chef coming out to deliver the food checking on us several times and then giving us a free dessert . I had the vegetarian platter and my friend had the lamb, we both thoroughly enjoyed the food and the pita bread was warm and extremely tasty. We were both full in spite of only eating half our meal and declined the desert. However the chef then brought us out fresh baklava that truly melted in your mouth. This is definitely my new favorite Mediterranean restaurant and I anticipate going back as soon as possible. I know you will enjoy your experience as well and encourage you to check it out.
The food here is excellent. We had a lamb special in cream sauce that was cooked to my spec and delicious. The baba is super garlicky, which is fine by me! I also have enjoyed the moussaka very much. The falafel is good, and vegetarian options are strong. The owners are friendly and want to make sure you have a good experience. Each dish is cooked to order, the chef explained to us. As such, this is not a super-quick-bite-to-eat kind of place, but your time there will be well spent.
I want to preface this by saying this will sound like an exaggeration, but this was honestly the best Mediterranean food I've ever tasted. I don't mean it was the most unusual or exotic - we just ordered Mediterranean favorites the vegetarian platter for two - but they were prepared with such a high degree of skill, each dish exceeded my expectations. I'm often disappointed when I try Mediterranean foods at restaurants, because after tasting it, I think I could make it better at home. But here, I found myself puzzling over how each dish was prepared, because they were all so fresh and flavorful. We didn't think we had room for dessert, but they surprised us by bringing us the most amazing piece of baklava I've ever tasted. Next time, I'm going to save room for more dessert and coffee, because it deserves further investigation! Speaking of beverages, I can highly recommend their rose water lemonade. The flavor really complemented the amazing food.
This restaurant is so delicious! My husband and I ate there last night and loved the experience. This is a family-run restaurant, the atmosphere was inviting and the food...whoa. They cook the carrots in honey and rose water. Neeed I say more? We will definitely be back. I got the Vegetarian Fiesta and loved it a really big serving, which I took part of home and just ate for lunch. Even the leftovers are crazy delicious!
This family-run spot offers such flavorful & scrumptious dishes! Orange blossom carrots, silky hummus, & crispy fluffy falafel balls were my faves. The setting feels elegant and comfortable — it was the perfect spot for a date night but I also hope to be back for a casual meal too. Everyone was warm and attentive without making us feel rushed.
Whenever I walk into a neighborhood restaurant and see groups of people, I look forward to the meal. So I was ready for a nice dinner at Promise Land Cafe. Baba ghanouj appetizer was very good. The chili sauce in the middle is lethal, so be aware of that. Appetizer came with a warm, light, fluffy pita. I ordered lamb, and was pleased with how tender the cut was, but a little disappointed with the lack of flavor. Carrots were seasoned nicely, and the rice was perfect for mixing in the sauce. The baklava was a let down. Walnut filling was tasty, but the filo layers were clumped together. Service was surprisingly slow, but very friendly. This is not a place you can eat quickly. All in all, not the best Mediterranean fare I've had, but tasty enough. I would come back next time I'm in the area. Nice to know: from 4-6, dinners are 50% off.
My favorite cuisine is Mediterranean/Eastern Mediterranean which is why I've been here a few times. I will say I've always had a great experience and have left satisfied. The food is fresh and high quality, the atmosphere is nice, and who I take to be the owner/chef, and the staff, is friendly and pleasant. All in all this place offers delicious food at a great value and it is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
