Story

We can't imagine a more appropriate setting for the Rita's story to begin than the sweltering hot summer of 1984. It was then that Bob Tumolo, a former Philadelphia firefighter, started selling Italian Ice from a small porch window in Bensalem, PA. Bob and his mother, Elizabeth, created their own Italian Ice recipe, which they made fresh each day and quickly perfected the flavors and consistency of the frozen treat, adding chunks of fresh fruit to some of the flavors. With the modest goal of earning a little extra income, he named the business after his wife, RITA!

Today, Rita's continues to grow, expand, and spread happiness everywhere it goes. Still made fresh every day with real fruit. Still refreshing. Still fun. Still delicious. Just like it was in the early days when Bob Tumolo and his mother opened the very first Rita's in 1984.

I've never had frozen custard before but this was delicious! I had vanilla custard mixed with peach Italian ice. It was creamy and thick and satisfying.
Came here for a special day and was definitely not disappointed!!! So glad I could find a lil piece of home in my new home so far down south!!!. The staff were amazing and accommodating!!! They didn't have my fave Flav, BUT they definitely didn't disappoint and made everything perfect!!! Love Rita's and def will be back
Custard - NO for me - it’s bottom of barrel milk base tastes like it to me and gave me the runs but Italian Ice Flavor was great! Had real lemon zest which was a little off putting but tolerable if you love lemon! Frozen Custard - I won’t get this again. I use to LOVE SHERIDANS FROZEN CUSTARD so I admit I compare, this at first bite tasted like cool whip. It didn’t taste freshly made more so like a milk base that’s frozen. Overall I would return for the Italian Ice. Prices very fair. Service quick.
The custard and gilato were good, but the atmosphere was awful. This was our first time trying Italian ice. We walked in the store; I said hello and none of the two young employees responded no other customers were in the store. Management should probably get new, courteous employees as they didn't make us feel welcomed and we will never visit this location again.
This was my first time at Rita's, and my friend and I both got frozen custard. It was perfect for a hot day! We ordered from the walk-up window, and the staff were all wearing masks. Additionally, people in line were social distancing. The frozen custard was creamy and tasted great with our toppings. I got Oreo, and my friend got Heath. At $5 for a small cup with one topping, it is a bit expensive, but I think it's in line with prices I've seen elsewhere for frozen custard. If you're okay with that price point, I recommend trying it out!
Very Clean, staff is courteous. Strawberry Lemonade and Mango was our favorite combination. Gelati was really good too if you like both custard and Italian ice.
This place is AMAZING! The owner is super cool and personable! They have dragonfruit vegan ice cream… try it! They also have so many flavors of Boba Tea which I love.

I like Rita’s .. I really do. I’ve come to this location for a long time. Just now I took a good, ~long~ sip of my peach frozen drink to get the last of it out and felt a chunk. No big. Probably a piece of pulp or something. Flicked it on my tongue to taste it, and thought “weird it’s kinda crunchy and tasteless”. NOT PULP. It was someone’s dirty, yellow hangnail stuck between my teeth. I never get nauseous even from the grossest things but from this I almost puked in the passenger seat of my car. Accidents happen. I understand but I don’t think I can ever sip so confidently out of a straw again! I’m disgusted.. I’m appalled.. I’m scarred .. I wanna vomit just writing this. I’m brushing my teeth 6 times when I get home and then burning my toothbrush. No offense to the fingernail provider but my stomach is doing the cha cha slide right now. GROSS.
Awesome treats and a great price. Try the cherry ice with the chocolate custard!
