This review is only in regards to the bakery at this location. Not sure what's actually going on, but 3 times now in the last week, I've stopped by here to pick up a dozen bakery donuts only to find the donuts case empty. When I asked the workers in the bakery if they have donuts, I've been told AND WITHOUT ANY SORT OF APOLOGY OR at least a little kindness that their deep fryer is down and they won't have any for a few days. Therefore I guess no donuts today, again. I then went to the store near my house in St. Helens and when I mentioned the fryer being down at this location to an employee there, he laughed and said that Safeway doesn't fry the donuts in house, that they haven't fried them there in the bakery for months now. I asked him if the policies were different at each store and he said no. Which males sense because Safeway isn't franchised and is unionized. Ridiculous. So I guess they just don't feel like putting the donuts out for sale or something? Not really sure what to think, but its super frustrating and time consuming to drive almost an hour in bad winter weather to a bakery in the morning, only to find an empty display case, and not be able to buy what I came for. So I guess from now on I'll just spend my money elsewhere and won't continue wasting my time & gas, and falsely hoping this bakery is actually selling what they advertise. Nope.
Avoid the Safeway in St Johns Portland OR. at all costs. Empty unattended shelves and refrigerators. Some beer you can find on the shelves have months old dates on the box- craft beer, an Oregon specialty. There is never more than one cashier open and either they are not trained or this store cannot keep good staff.. God forbid you have an error on your bill because it took 10 days to correct a simple one due to the utter inability of the staff and management to want to help. I'm not bringing up the homeless and the unkempt store, however be prepared. This place needs management and fast. Go to the Fred Mayer down the street. I did not read the reviews before posting mine, I'm not the only one to point out what must be obvious to management. They clearly don't care. I'm going to contact the corporate office.
This place is chronically understaffed. I had a butcher refuse to cut meat. Watched a staff member put her hands on a customer. The produce dept is full of rotten/moldy food. Once, while going through it to pick out non-rotten strawberries, a staff member threatened to beat up my boyfriend for making his job harder. They do have a lovely cheese selection that is impressive considering... The cheese is why it's a 2
Great store. Have shopped here for a while. Good sales and selection. The service clerks are always helpful when I need them. Love the layout too.
Clean. Smiling clerks. Helpful stockers. Abundant choices. Many GF items. Full service pharmacy. Regular bakery with a few GF items in freezer next to bakery at end of dairy doors. My draw is their most excellent deli ham. I like it cut thin. They usually accommodate my requests but I've often felt clerks are new or unfamiliar with the job. Once or twice I've seen same person. If I didn't have to wait for them to get familiar with job each time they'd get a 5 star. I love the Black Forest smoked ham and mesquite turkey. Both are excellent on hot sandwiches or my personal fave, crepes. Prices are moderate. Sales frequent. Cheap lunches especially if gluten is no problem. Fountain drinks available and they have Starbucks. Lots of self check stations with clerks ready to help nearby. Usually fast line checkers, too. Driving from Willamette Blvd entry on Richmond Ave is easier to navigate rather than Ivanhoe. Buses stop nearby. Post Office is next door. Old review. Don't know why it didn't post. Pretty right on. Just pandemic has changed a lot. Mask on. Clerks subdued, I would be too. Not as cleaned as when pandemic first started. Holiday season is now. Past Thanksgiving, into Christmas.
This is not a good Safeway. The pharmacy never answers the phone. They only stock one lane and then use self-check-out for everything else. They only keep a few self-checkout systems open, so expect to wait longer than usual. Their order online to store pickup is the only redeeming feature.
I love spending my hard earned money here while the hobos just help themselves with whatever they want. Nobody is allowed to touch them. It’s literally a SAFE way…for thieves, hobos and crackheads to steal. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen degenerate scums walk out with full case of beer. Why? Why do you let it go on? Bring back the security guards. Do SOMETHING.
Ordered a cake to have a simple “happy birthday” on top and it looked terrible. The person in the bakery taking our order mentioned that we needed to place an order 24 hr in advance and it was well over 24 hours, she then mentioned the cake decorator would be gone, I asked if they could just give me some icing in a piping bag and I could write on it she said that they could get it done. Well we picked the cake up and it looks terrible. Highly disappointed in this experience.
Good clean and organized Supermarket that opens until 11 pm. Lots of self check outs made it very convenient neighhood store.
This is a tough one for me. This Safeway is a cornerstone of the community, and is the go-to for grocery needs in St Johns. Also, they are always well-stocked--it's rare for me not to find what I'm looking for. That said, they really struggle. Chronically understaffed, it is not unusual for checkout to take just as long as the shopping itself. A neighbor calls this, "The Safeway the Corporate Forgot" and it's not hard to see why.
