Saigon Village Restaurant

We read the reviews before going here and we're excited at the prospect of enjoying Vietnamese food here in Chincoteague. We entered this dimly lit room and were somewhat startled by the loud greeting by what appeared to be the owner. We felt somewhat hastened to order and when we did -the food was on our table in what seemed like 5 minutes or less. The pan fried shrimp and broccoli was not fried but boiled or smothered. The sauce tasted a little like peanut sauce, but mostly of white sugar. The situation was uncomfortable, for me, by the glaring stare from the, presumable, owner, trying to determine if we bought into this mock meal or was enjoying it. There was no atmosphere...no soft Asian music whispering softly in the background; nothing notable on the walls or table to reflect the culture - however there seemed to be a familiar following as I witnessed visitors coming in and being greeted by name. My husband and I are well-traveled and have eaten authentically well-prepared food all around the world - and very often in neighborhood ethnic restaurants here in the states. The meal we ate here was an extreme disappointment.

Small, clean and cozy place with diligent attention and reasonably priced Vietnamese food. You can get some classics like beef and broccoli, steamed rice and sops. Food is served fast and portions and plentiful. Taste is great. There is parking lot next to the building. This may be one of the best price/quality culinary options in the island.

Not even a big fan of this type of food but went with others and even I loved it. The cozy atmosphere and fast efficient service were just big bonuses.

If I miss one thing the most in the off-season here on Chincoteague, it's Saigon Village. A charming old building downtown that serves authentic Vietnamese. Noodle soups, BBQ, stir-fries, Vietnamese iced coffee and tea. You can bring your own beer or wine, and they'll provide glasses for you (no corkage fees, or any of that city-slicker nonsense). Tables inside, or you can sit outside and enjoy the hustle and bustle of Main Street.
