[November] Finally! We tried Sonny's! I used to work for Lori Vacco and am so happy to have reconnected after many years! So, we had to go experience Sonny's for ourselves. Bruschetta, Tuscan pizza, and chicken Romano. Okay, I have to admit, I hadn't picked up a jar of Sonny's red sauce at Hy-Vee. But, I will tell you the first item on my grocery list is! Wow. That is hands-down, the best red sauce I've had!
Their pizza is an excellent thin crust. It had the best crisp, cooked to perfection. The Chicken Romano was also really delicious.
The food was pretty good but there was nothing extra special about it. My husband and I both ordered the baked cavatelli. He got it with meatballs and I got it with Italian sausage. We both thought it was tasty but agreed that we have had better cavatelli from other places in town that was much better. The menu said the noodles were supposed to be gnocchi-shaped, but they were shells instead. The dish came with a cold and dry dinner roll that was a little disappointing. It would have been nice if it had been warmed up and a little softer. The butter pat was softened, so that was a nice touch. For $15, we were expecting a little more bread or at least better quality. I thought about ordering a sandwich but the only sides that came with it were cottage cheese, pasta salad, grilled vegetables or roasted potatoes. I really wanted French fries and couldn't believe they didn't offer that as one of their sides. I don't think I've never been to a restaurant that didn't offer fries as one of the sides for a sandwich. I thought that was kind of strange. I've heard their pizza is good. If I ever came back, I might try it but I don't think I would make a special trip to eat here again. If I was in the area and was craving Italian, I might try it again. The service was good. The waitress was nice and kept our drink glasses filled. The food here is decent but I feel like there are better options elsewhere.
If you haven’t tried their Red Sauce—-DO IT! Some of the best sandwiches in town! The Italian Beef is my go to lunch option! For dinner, the hubby and I love to share a pizza and some wine! We’re classy like that. Owners Johnny & Quincy Vacco are what my family calls “good people”. Skip the chain restaurants & support Amazing local spots!
We visited Sonny's the first time as we were coming back from an out of town visit and drove by, turned around and went in! There was a small wait, however an option to eat outside. We chose outside, and it was very nice. Service was spot on. I always try the Alfredo at Italian restaurants, and this Alfredo may have been the best! So creamy. My husband had the cavatelli and enjoyed it very much. We will definitely visit again!
Good food and very cute inside! Only issue was our server:/ unfriendly and hasn’t checked on our table once… everyone else around had excellent service and the nice lady who gave us our pizza not our server was super kind. We drove from a half hour away so disappointed on the service:/ as well as my side salad that was just lettuce and ranch… when the people around me had full salads. Will return but wish service was a tad better.
One of our favorite pizza and Italian places to eat. Small dining room inside, and it fills up fast. When the weather is nice there is also a patio. Prices are great and so is the food and service.
Had a fabulous dinner here on a Saturday night! Warm patio, friendly staff, live guitar music. Loved it all!Food: 5/5
Absolutely amazing!! The have some of the best pizza in town. Not to mention amazing P.O.P. S, soup, and bread. I am always pleased when i come here. It’s a regular date night place for me and my boyfriend! They also have the bomb drinks and amazing service. I love this place and highly recommend coming. You get a lot of bang for your buck as well!
Some friends told us about this place. I wasn't sure what to expect from the outside. When we got in the dinning room was very small and only has about 10 tables. The place was packed, we went on a Wednesday. After about 30 min we finally were seated out waitress, Brea, greeted us warmly and got our drink order started. She alone is worth going to Sonny's. We got our food in short time and it was DELICIOUS! I recommend everyone try this place. 2nd best pasta in Des Moines.
