South Orange Middle School

This is a great school. The staff are kind, and most students are respectful to others. Yes, it's definitely in need of some work on the classrooms- in some places it's just falling apart. However, it's not that bad. Students here aren't afraid to stand up for themselves, which doesn't come with life. It's something that's taught. The teachers don't just teach us what's in the curriculum, they also show us how to be respectful and how to be good role models. Even though some of the students may not be the best role models now, I guarantee at some point (not just while they're attending the school) that they will improve on that.

This school is fine. The teachers here are really nice for the most part, but sadly two teachers at my two years at soms were fired. Its true though that this school really could use some work. Some of our classrooms, hallways, and staircases really could use some serious cleaning up, and our bathrooms are horrific. I also find it kind of weird how we don't have any official sports teams. Some of my friends' schools in different towns have all sorts of teams, but we only have gym class and a few sports clubs. One thing I don't like at all about this school is how we aren't united. Sure we claim to be the "Soms Family" but really, we're not. For the most part, the students here are woke, but that doesn't mean homophobic things haven't been written in bathrooms, or racial slurs haven't been spoken, or that people don't judge each other because of the way they look, or because of a disability, or because of the way they act. I do like how are school is artsy and all, though. We have really good music programs and some form of art is mandatory. I think our school could improve, but there are good parts to it as well.

I would give this school 0 stars but that’s not possible. This school is broke, the bathrooms are horrible, it’s always 90 degrees in the building no matter what season and their are just so many rude people here. In sixth grade the teachers are rude and not understanding (except for Mrs. McClure, your the best!.) I’m always bored at this school. Their is no outdoor programs, and if you have a disability or learn different from others this school is definitely not for you. Their are so many great things in life this isn’t one of them

This school does not know what ending gun violence means...a walkout for 17 mins, each minute for each person that has died in the Florida school shooting is not enough...there has been multiple mass shootings. 348 mass shootings in 2017, 34 mass shootings as of February 21. We NEED to stand up for ALL of the people who have been killed in mass shootings. In the 1900's black people stood up for their rights by marching/walking for HOURS to end segregation and give black people rights... what has happened to this society? What makes it different now???

With school board members like Stephanie Lawson-Muhammad why would anyone want to put their children in these schools.
