A local favorite! The food is always fresh with exploding flavor combinations. Jessica and her staff do an incredible job at making each customer feel like in-home guest. I love this cafe!
Everything that we have tried is greatness. The different flavors and textures are like invitations to try something new each time - which is good since their menu changes daily! Open for work week lunch, Tues is fried chicken sandwich day, while Fri is burger day. Their BLT pasta is yummy and the deviled eggs are “the best I’ve ever had”. Cute decor, free street parking, and don’t forget about dessert.
WOW! First soft shell crab sandwich in 2 years due to Covid shutting down restaurants for lunch. The Spotted Salamander Catering did their’s differently but it was still good. They used a homemade sweet hot Nashville sauce and I had them put it on toast rather than soft bread. This is a great place with good seats and excellent atmosphere. While I was there they had about 20 customers get takeout or curbside which I’ve never seen before. There are quite a few offices nearby, so, I figured many takeouts were for that reason alone.
If you are in Columbia you HAVE to eat here!!! The food is incredible, the quality is consistent, and the variety makes it that much better. I think the truest testament to the food is how incredible the tomato sandwiches in the summer are. It is a true challenge to make the simple extraordinary and memorable but they do it everytime! I cannot replicate it no matter how hard I try. Their menu rotates with specials and they are always delicious. Highly recommend the deviled eggs and pimento cheese as well. Cannot rave about this place enough!!
Wow! The food and experience is top notch. They have the most delicious deviled eggs, brisket mac-n-cheese, wrap and desserts. I could eat something different every time. My taste buds were blessed with their food.
Upon entering this cute cafe, I new it was a winner! Immediately greeted with smiles and warm feels. The quaint small dining area was filled with small details that should not be overlooked, and gives the Spotted Salamander uniqueness. Note the different salt shakers, the way your check is delivered, etc… The staff is extremely friendly and inviting. Our waitress was patient when we took our time ordering. She never let our glasses of water and tea get half empty. I was so impressed by this! Ok, now the food was absolutely delicious. I got their chicken salad with a side of broccoli salad. The flavors in both were perfect. I want to know what spices they put in their chicken salad, so delicious. I liked that it was chucks of chicken and not shredded. Highly recommend this eclectic cafe, you won’t be disappointed! My new favorite lunch spot! Thank you for making my lunch meeting so enjoyable.
It's a really lovely place, comfortable but classy atmosphere, and service was fantastic. And I think the food is very good, but I wasn't blown off my feet by what I ate, so it's an expectation vs. reality thing for me that lost that star. My sangria was a bit watered down, to start. Then the pimento cheese, which was my real goal for the meal, doesn't have any pimentos! It's just finely shredded cheese and mayo and probably some spices. It was good, but it wasn't great. I had it on my list to try some really good SC pimento cheese while I was in town, and this place was put forward as a good option, and I just wasn't impressed. My main was a fried fish sandwich, which was very good all around, but nothing groundbreaking, it was mainly just a quality piece of fish. They change their specials according to the day of the week - I know at least that there is fried chicken on Tuesdays and burgers on Thursdays, which both might have been better than my fish. They also specialize in deviled eggs and some sort of small "ham delight" sandwich, which also might have been better options. If I were closer, or lived here, I might make a point of trying more, but I think I'd rather try other restaurants first.
Locally owned restaurant by Chef Jessica Shillato. Farm to table restaurant. They use local produce. The food is always fresh. We have been customers since 2015. I love attending the wine pairing and beer pairing meals in the evenings. They book up fast and are limited. Those evenings have always been a lot of fun and delicious. We have also attended FreeTimes events where they catered for Halloween. Also a lot of fun! Cool to see how creative they were with the food. I work one mile away and drop in for lunch from time to time. Never disappointed! Every cake is delicious, but crack cake is the best! Oh and the deviled eggs. Highly recommend! Huge supporter! : Follow on Instagram and on Facebook for daily menu updates and photos.
Spotted Salamander is just the best! One of the things we love is their consistency - you can count on great locally sourced food, friendly knowledgeable service, and that’s whether you dine in or get convenient curbside takeout. It’s a place we take friends and family, and recommend to them when they are in town. The food - whether it’s a craving for comfort food, a light salad, or a fun daily special, it’s all there. If you go, get the deviled eggs, and save room for dessert! Vegetarian options: There are always several salad options, a soup, or sides that are vegetarian. And, they are yummy! A favorite is the Seared Cauliflower! Dietary restrictions: Most everything is made to order, and they have always been graciously willing to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate my food sensitivities and allergies.
The Spotted Salamander has a delicious and creative menu, although actual salamander is missing. The pecan chicken salad sandwich is a winner, and we loved the deviled eggs. The dining room is pleasant and inviting, the staff are friendly and efficient. The only flaw here is with the coffee. The first cup the waiter brought me looked and tasted weaker than my late grandmother's tea. She never allowed a tea bag to steep longer than 60 seconds. The second cup was dark enough to look good, and it was fresh, but it was thin and would never pass muster at a McDonald's or Sheetz.
