St Peter's Episcopal Church

About

A vibrant community of faith in Center City Charlotte where questions about the mystery, love and dream of God are welcome.

Story

The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion and embodies a heritage that includes attitudes reflective of both ancient and contemporary Catholicism and Protestantism.

St. Peter's was founded in 1834 as the first Episcopal Mission in Charlotte at a time when Mecklenburg County was composed of just a series of small villages. In 1857, St. Peter's moved to the current location at the corner of Seventh and Tryon Streets. This "Little Church" was razed and replaced in 1892 with the structure that proudly sits there today. We recently completed renovating the Church and replacing our old pipe organ with a wonderful new Fisk organ. We will continue to preserve this beautiful building for generations to come. As the city of Charlotte has grown, so has St. Peters, providing the community with a large body of contributions that have been examples of lasting achievements through faith, courage, and ceaseless devotion to Christian causes. St. Peter's has been an integral part of the development and renewal of the downtown Charlotte community.

As an Episcopal parish, we believe in maintaining a strong tie to our traditional values while being adaptable to the changing times of the early 21st century. We want to remain open to the leading of the Spirit as God draws people who are often different from one another, by providing opportunities for interaction and the learning and acceptance that comes from being open to the Spirit. We do this by providing opportunities for fellowship, outreach, worship and spiritual growth.

Saint Peter's is often used for weddings, baptisms, and funerals for both our standing members and for members of our larger city family who may not have a direct affiliation. Please contact the church office and arrange an appointment to visit with our Rector to discuss your particular situation.

Mission

Our Parish Vision is to become: a community of bold followers of Jesus, a crowd that effects good change for the world, a place known for radical love and welcome, and a beacon of hope in Center City Charlotte.

Worship At St.Peter's

Our central act of worship is the Holy Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, The Lord's Supper, or the mass. We worship in accordance with The Book of Common Prayer and The Hymnal of 1982, books that have been authorized by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. As we are a diverse congregation, our worship services reflect a variety of different styles to meet the personal needs and expectations of our many members.

On Sundays, our morning services are at 8:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. At 5:00 p.m., Evenings at St. Peter's feature contemplative services that include candlelight, music from the Taize community or traditional sung prayers, as well as the Holy Eucharist.

On Sunday mornings, Holy Chow breakfast is served from 8:30-9:25 a.m. for $4.00 per person. Coffee hour and fellowship follow the 10:45 a.m. service. And a variety of Formation (education) programs for all ages are offered from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in our Parish House.

Throughout the calendar year that mirrors the public school calendar, we have Christian Education for both children and adults. We heartily welcome children to participate in our services and believe that the habit of church attendance is instilled at an early age.

"Our Vision is to be a place of unconditional welcome and a beacon of God’s love in the heart of Charlotte. Our Mission is to nurture a community of courageous followers of Jesus and inspire love of God and love of neighbor.Summer worship takes place at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings."

Was visiting downtown Charlotte and came across this historic site. Was impressed by the architecture and the aesthetic of the church. Understand still in use and hosts a number of services and meetings for the community. Appreciate the historic value of this place
Definitely the best Christmas Service I've ever been to and possibly the best Service ever+
MY wife and I have been members at st. Peter's for almost two years. The first Sunday that we came Second Sunday of the new year, we were struck by the breathtaking worship. That alone was reason enough to stick around--I would be hard pressed to find more beautiful worship in the city. But it was the inclusive and loving atmosphere that has led us to call it home. From Father Ollie and Father Jacob the rectors to the vestry board to the regular person sitting in the pews, we have found nothing but welcome and acceptance. St. Peter's is a place where you can be a part of the community if you are white or black, gay or straight, rich or poor, and cis gendered or trans. I am so thankful that we found such an incredible church that cares for one another and its community.
Work Uptown and stopped to partake of the sidewalk services on Ash Wednesday which is such a convenient but meaningful offering. I have attended a service or two here as well. Beautiful church.
Great place to worship. Friendly and the message is always meaningful.
The clergy, sermons, organ music, musical talent, and choir school create a very moving and spiritual opportunity for prayer and reflection. The Christmas Eve prelude and service is magical and spiritually uplifting as no other.
Loving, diverse community in uptown, active in social justice and outreach. Loving priests and youth director.
I have been a member for awhile. St Peter's is a loving and diverse faith community
