The Beauty Shop Restaurant

About

Lunch and Dinner in a hip neighborhood. Sunday Brunch around the world! Look good. Eat good.

Story

“Look Good. Eat Good.” are the words emblazoned on the front windows at the Beauty Shop. This hip and trendy restaurant in the Cooper-Young district of midtown Memphis does both, as it conjures up images of a ‘50s-style beauty shop, formerly Priscilla Presley’s curl-and-dye spot. It’s a camp wonderland where the façade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers.

Nostalgia is served with a sense of humor here. The beauty shop flashback comes complete with original mint green wash basins filling in as sinks behind the hand built bar, made of tiger maple wood. The terrazzo floor is original. Glass brick stalls serve as intimate booths. Mixed with the retro renderings are modern touches such as hand-blown art-glass lights, and glamorous copper and silver-leaf walls.

At this offbeat restaurant, the décor pays homage to the space’s beauty parlor past, while the food offers flavors from around the globe. The Beauty Shop’s fabulous menu is not for the faint of flavor. The cuisine is clean-cut sophistication. The sights, scents and flavors of the Beauty Shop are both bold and quirky, and make for an out of the ordinary dining experience. The menu has a down home American stance with world-beat tints and edges.

For instance, you can’t help noticing the Watermelon & Wings, a dish that flirts with being a Deep South caricature but works (without a moon pie in sight). Its unusual combination of huge chicken wings dipped in white Szechwan pepper and sweet chile lime juice, brushed with sugar, then deep fried to incredible crispness and tenderness, and served with chunks of luscious sweet watermelon, sprinkled with toasted cashews, raises the concept of down-home to divine.

The Beauty Shop is yet another labor of love for chef/ restaurateur/ food artist Karen Carrier, who has created a constant buzz in her hometown city with exotic themes and dishes since her return from New York City in 1987.

“I don’t know what words, say, Dr. Johnson or Woodrow Wilson used when they wanted to assert that something was cool and hip, but those are the words we have, so I might as well use them. Beauty Shop is about the coolest, hippest restaurant around. It scream “Memphis,” yet does so with ingenuity and originality; it plays a wacky theme to the limit, but doesn’t stream beyond the pale; it makes you feel good to be there, part of the fun, part of the animated crowd, and leaves you well-fed to boot. What could be cooler that that?”

Wow what a treat this was! First of all I was very impressed with being seated at our exact reservation time. The atmosphere was cool and the server was excellent. We had the Watermelon and Wings and I do believe it’s one of the best wings in Memphis. My wife even enjoyed them and she is not a fan of wings. She had the Bangkok salad and I had the Lucky Pot. Her salad was great but the Lucky Pot was amazing! The mixture of flavors was incredible with all the dishes we had here. I would come back just for the wings alone. So glad we tried this place and look forward to returning. I’d recommend this spot to anyone!
The aesthetics of this place is so nice. Love the beauty shop vibe! The hostess was absolutely amazing and makes you feel welcomed. Our waitress was very busy so she wasn’t as attentive as we needed her to be. We waited a while to pay. We only got appetizers because we really wanted breakfast food. The onion rings were the best I’ve ever tasted! I give those a 10/10!! The potstickers were pretty good also. My drink was perfect!!! I will definitely be back just to try a few more drinks and the brunch. Parking was perfect because we went during the week before the lunch time rush.
Fun place for brunch! We scored one of the outdoor seating pods which was super cool. They even had a heater for when it’s cold. Our food was great and our server was super nice. A good variety of options for brunch. Highly recommend the grapefruit mimosa!
The food and the drinks were amazing! The seating area actually looks like a beauty salon. The only con was that the seating area was a bit tight; it wasn't really set up to accommodate large groups or full figured people, so with that in mind I definitely recommend you order to go cause the food is delicious. And also unless you find free parking on the street be prepared to pay a minimum of 5 bucks to park in the public parking lot that's directly beside the building or the lot across the street. Oh and the sign on the outside of the building says Bar and not The Beauty Shop, but if you see the building with the dark green awnings then you're in the right place!
The food and ambiance was great. I ordered the monkey bread for an appetizer. The bread was good but not great. However, the lamb chops for dinner were top notch. The service was excellent with a very friendly wait staff. The theme is very unique. This is must stop in Memphis
In summary, the beauty shop has delicious and unique selections served in a cleverly themed environment. The small plates are *small* so I would encourage you to get at least one per person at a minimum. We got the wild mushrooms and the grilled peach. The mushrooms were an unusual variety in a delicious broth that I could have drank with a spoon. The peach was grilled perfectly and almost tasted like a marshmallow at times. The main courses were well sized for each of us. The cakes were the least impressive part of the meal but mainly just in contrast with the exceptional quality and creativity expressed in the starters and main course. Service was timely and professional. Note they included a 20% built-in gratuity even though there were just two of us.
What a fantastic restaurant. We came with a large group, and were not disappointed. The menu is varied but everything we had was delicious. The favorites were the lamb salad, curry ramen dish, and the cauliflower appetizer.
One of the best local spots to visit any time of day! Food is always fresh and we love that the specials change often. You cannot go wrong with anything you choose. The servers are also friendly and attentive.Dine in: YesOutdoor seating: YesDelivery: No
Went here based on a list of best local restaurants. I'm not sure what we did to upset our server but she seemed short with us. We had drinks, appetizers, and dinner. Everything was fine except my pork chop was undercooked. Our server offered to "throw it back on the grill" or get me something else but I opted to just get the check. Even if the porkchop had been cooked well it was difficult to cut because it was served in a bowl with lots of broth around it. When our server came back she let me know she had taken it off our check but seemed to not really care. The rest of the food was okay. Overall it was a disappointment as the atmosphere was very cool. We will not return here during the next few days of our trip. I have added pictures of the pork chop and I should add we were the first diners there when they opened and the bathroom was dirty.
We went for Saturday brunch around 11 without a reservation and were able to get a nice table on the patio. Fans made it very comfortable. Service was fast and friendly and our food came out quicker than I expected for the exceptional quality. Nice job kitchen!!! The Beneduck was amazing! Balanced flavors, not too heavy and the almond skordalia was such a nice touch! It was our first time, because we are 3 hours from Memphis, but we will definitely be back for dinner soon!
