Story

The Council on Recovery is Houston’s oldest & largest non-profit organization providing prevention, education, intervention, treatment, and recovery services for individuals and their families affected by alcoholism, drug abuse, and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Founded in 1946, The Council is the only organization of its kind providing services to every age and stage in life: Programs for new mothers and babies. Child and adolescent services. Adult outpatient rehab and treatment. Family recovery and support. Specialized services for the elderly. The Council truly helps people throughout their entire lives.

At the heart of The Council is the Center for Recovering Families, Houston’s premier outpatient addiction and mental health treatment facility, changing lives of individuals and their families through holistic programs that heal the body, mind, and spirit.

The Center for Recovering Families offers a full spectrum of treatment programs and therapeutic services for adults, adolescents, and children with the goal of helping clients personally recover and rejoin their families in a healthy, loving, and supportive manner. These include:
• Comprehensive Assessment
• Healing Choices, 8-week intensive outpatient treatment program
• Relapse & Renewal Clinic for those struggling with sobriety
• Intervention Services
• Family Recovery Services, including individual and group therapy
• Adolescent Services & Parent Education
• Children’s Clinical Services & Kids Camp

The Council on Recovery, through our publicly-funded programs, also offers a helping hand to those without insurance or financial resources who may need it the most. The Council truly does what many traditional rehab centers don’t - we turn no one away.

The Council on Recovery is a United Way agency and also receives funding from private contributions and grants, special events, and program fees.

Shameful facility. They have contracted with 211 to get people in under false premises regarding payment. They charge 800 for an assessment/evaluation! Not treatment, an evaluation. NO SLIDING SCALE. Yes, it's insane and clearly just for the very wealthy, because who else can or would pay that amount just to answer a questionairre? Also they don't take insurance for this service. Terrible. 2ll is reporting the assessments are free or sliding scale. This is incorrect information Council on Recovery is sadly turning its back on the most desperate people among us - those with addictions and living in poverty.
This organization is great! The facility and parking feel safe & very clean. The staff at the front desk are always courteous and helpful. They offer many amazing services, I have felt very welcomed. The only bad thing I can say is that in order to speak with anyone you must leave a message any time u call, they do call back within a day or 2, but if you miss their call you have to leave a message again and wait again a day or 2. It has taken me a week to finally speak with a person.
I was not aware of the side withdrawal effects that come with quitting alcohol, and how dangerous it is when someone is dependant and quits from one day to another. Luckily i found this facility were professional employee Ramona returned my call from. She honestly, genuinely and willingly took her time to answer all the questions that I had and she guided me through the process of how to quit alcohol in a healthy way. Ramona successfully found a detox program that will help me deal with my horrible alcohol addiction and with the professional help that I need. Although Ramona doesn't directly deal with alcohol withdrawal problems. She was able to identify and guide me to the right person. Thanks Ramona and The Council on Recovery for all of your help!
Terrible !!terrible ! terrible.. So I called here for my 1st appointment which was today. After booking my first app which was today I was hesitant because of some of the bad reviews. Guess what I was right!!!!A lady called me today that the person I was suppose to see called in sick. Is therapy something to play with? no mam this was the best thing that could have happened. This was the wrong place to start she express no empathy or concern then offer an app days later or for next week really? I am glad that app was cancel on their end I understand people get sick but should have at least sounded like she care but didn't said nothing felt nothing her responses where flat. Booking an appointment with people who do care to help me.
Such bad organization, I went for my iop interview in May and it took all the way until the end of June to get me into a dbt group not even the actual iop. The problem was the communication on part of the staff. Never kept me up to date and everything was very sketchy. I received numerous apology texts from them, but nothing ever changed...instead I was taken out of group after the first meeting and was just now in JULY scheduled for a follow up appointment to discuss what the plan moving forward was supposed to be. what we pretty much discussed the very first day i set foot in the building This is just my experience and I hope it helps people who start going through similar experiences to not waste yall's time.
Staff was very rude. They offer no direct services to clients. They host meetings for recovery groups and motivate you to go— but they don’t have clinicians on staff to help you like the last place I tried. I was disappointed with my experience and found the staff to be lackluster all around.
Nice environment, good parking, and very polite staff
Over and over, the Council has provided services to me at times of crisis. They do wonderful work and provide multiple resources for families and the community at large.
My brother came here in October to get help and they referred him to an inpatient rehab, that never helped him. The rehab place has had him on the wait list for 8 months since October and the council on recovery says there’s nothing they can do. He’s more addicted than ever with no help in sight
Great experience. Very friendly and polite staff.
