So nice seeing Josh back behind the bar after a 10 year hiatus, such a nice, solid person! And as always, it is a so much fun hanging out at a true neighborhood spot!Food: 5/5
Ugh! Really sad to be writing this as I've been coming here for a few years now and considered it to be my go-to neighborhood spot. My girlfriends and I stopped in on march 2nd and were chatting for about forty minutes with our drinks, then we ordered water, and were about to order another round of beer when our waiter cut us off mid-order and said "Here's the thing ladies, it's going to get really busy in here soon and what we're not gonna do is have you sit and order waters from me all night." I'm not sure what brought this on as I didn't feel we were taking up too much space, it wasn't crowded, and we had finished our first round very recently. I haven't seen this server before, so maybe he was new, or a manager or something, but it just felt unnecessarily pointed, patronizing, and unkind. I'm a former bartender and my priority was always the safety and sobriety of my customers. Especially as a young woman, it sucks to be spoken to this way in a bar setting by staff who should be looking out for us. I, too, wish I could slam a beer quickly and order the next -- but alas, my pals and I are small people! The Dead Poet has always been so welcoming and I'm not sure what was going on, but I hope that there's a bit more awareness of customer service and safety moving forward.
I loved sitting at the bar and seeing the wide variety of liquors on the shelf. the music/ambiance was great and the cocktails were delicious. the bartenders knew the names of all regulars which was nice to see. would come back for a quick drink again.Service: 5/5
Had a nice Guinness pour from Dead Poet plus a couple decent other beers in the Poet Pilsner and Ebb Kolsch. All in all a nice place to meet locals and out of towners alike. Barmen were really good at what they do that made the good atmosphere that much better. Pour one out for the Dead Poet!Service: 5/5
Please see the owners response below. My original review is still in quotes. If the barriers were placed there to cover up an oil slick good on them. I'm keeping the original review here for others that may have seen this photo circulating online. This was not my photo. "Imagine having the gall to block a bike lane with your sign. Disgusting behavior from the management."
Cool place! And you get 2 free drinks for yourself only on your birthday if you share a birthday with one of the famous writers on their Instagram. Very cozy. No food other than hotdogs and popcorn though.
Good drinks. Hot dogs are a great drunk food. The fact that they cook them behind the bar makes it that much betterFood: 5/5

A beautiful bar in the upper west side is a great Bar just in the middle of 81 street and 82 street the have amazing beers and a good food to enjoying. The place is open till 4m so you have time to have a cold beer after work that do have a food menu so you can have food and also a beer the atmosphere is a plus is a local bar but with friendly staff after all good bar to spending some time in there
The Dead Poet is an awesome place to grab a low key beer probably make it a Guinness, keep reading on the UWS. The walls are adorned with, well, dead poets and prose, but there's a poetry to the bar itself too. An entire wall is set up backward so that it looks forward through the massive mirror you'll face when you sit at the bar. What can I say I'm a fan of subtlety. Also, the more Guinness you drink the closer you'll get to having your name on the wall. Some folks have had 500, 1000, even over 5000 Guinness pints here. I understand why.
