The First Baptist Church In the City of New York

Story

The First Baptist Church in the City of New York is a Christian congregation based in a sanctuary built in 1890-93 at the intersection of Broadway and West 79th Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City. The church is a conservative, independent, evangelistic, mission-oriented church in fellowship with the Southern Baptist Convention.Revolutionary yearsThe first attempt to establish a Baptist presence in New York City dates to 1711, when William Wightman began his ministry. A church was built on Gold Street but disbanded eight years later because of financial recession. Earlier attempts at forming a Baptist church in Flushing, Queens took place by William Wickenden and others in the 1650s.In 1745, Jeremiah Dodge settled in New York City, and began holding prayer meetings in his home. He was a member of the Fishkill Baptist Church. When he learned of Benjamin Miller at nearby Scotch Plains Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, he asked him to come and hold preaching services at the prayer meetings, which he did. Other ministers preached to this group from time to time, and in 1753, all thirteen of them joined the Scotch Plains Baptist Church after Miller had baptized some of them. They were organized as an independent Baptist church on June 19, 1762 by Benjamin Miller and John Gano - the latter being called as Pastor - and took the name "First Baptist Church in the City of New York". Gano served as pastor until 1776 when he became Chaplain in General Washington's American Army. The congregation's first sanctuary was at 35 Gold Street in Lower Manhattan, built in 1759-60.

Good kind people work in this church, they serve free breakfast from 9:00-10:00 A.M. Help will come if you need help. This church would have a free service, Volunteers work for you. You can get it here. 1. I eat breakfast Tuesday/Thursday. Sandwich/Chicken or Vegetarian soup in the morning. 2. Shower and free new clothes after shower. 3. Restroom, here you can go to the toilet. 4. Books You can read books in the library until 12:00. 5. Assistance programs. 6. By volunteering, you can give 1-2 hours of your time and help people. 7. Communication, if you have problems or are in a difficult situation in life, they will help you here. God is in the heart of each of us. Accept a helping hand - you are not alone in this world.
Hearing that this was a historical landmark, we visited this church as a family. Extremely diverse attendees from various ethnic, racial groups. The Sunday school was dealing with how to handle feelings such as anger and how to manage and overcome your anger to have more healthy relationships and family dynamics. Extremely relevant and helpful. The Sunday preaching by Pastor Harry was dynamic, clear and helpful. The line by line study of the scriptures and how it relates to other books of the Bible was clearly explained: Christ is the Savior. As imperfect people we all need his help to free us from what ensnares or holds us captive to live a free life. The exposition was clear, engaging and relevant. There was also a Baptism and the sharing was encouraging. The architecture and acoustics was very uplifting.
We love to worship the Lord here with simple instruments and meaningful songs. No spotlights, celebrity performance or solos. Pastor Harry expounds the Scriptures to edify and encourage. It's a mixed congregation, very friendly, many young adults and young families. Come worship God and hear what He has to say!
Loved my visit to this oldest of Baptist churches in NYC. The building wears a kind of shiny-at-the-elbows beauty, but the real joy was to worship with these fellow believers and hear God’s word preached straight and true.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree

I have been a member of FBC for the last 5+ years and am so thankful! We are currently meeting each Sunday at 9:45 for Sunday School and 11am for the church service. Masks on and socially distanced seating have made it possible to still worship together, and for that I deeply thank the Lord!
A wonderful congregation to worship with on Sunday mornings in the city and worth considering if you live in NYC and are seeking a church home, or visiting this amazing city at any point during the year! I've visited this church twice in the past year while visiting New York City and can't say enough good things about it! A few reasons I love visiting this wonderful church: 1. Easy to access from many points in the city via subway 79th and Broadway Station is located steps from the church's front doors. The historic and beautiful building on the corner of 79th and Broadway is hard to miss. 2. Great Preaching, I've heard Matt Hoskins both times I've attended services. I have been both challenged and encouraged by his clear explanation of scripture and it's application to the lives of all people: Christian believers and those who are exploring Christianity. 3. Wonderful worship time full of hymns, prayers, and meditating on scripture. 4. Friendly, and diverse congregation. From the greeters at the door to those seated in the pews next to you, you will feel welcome as soon as you enter the building. 5. I haven't made use of this aspect of the worship services myself but I know they offer both a nursery for parents with small children, and a separate children's worship so parents are free to be in the service without children while simultaneously offering a kid-friendly environment in the main service making it a great place for families in all stages and with varying preferences.
Praise God for this Church! First Baptiste Church has one authority- The Bible. The congregants are committed to each other like the new testament early churches, The pastor is faithfully dividing the word of God as per Paul’s instruction to Timothy! The congregants are always eager to hear the Truth- God’s word which is the Truth as per our Lords word in John 17. If you are looking for a church , Consider visiting First Baptiste Church.
