General Evangeline Booth, daughter of the Salvation Army’s founder and then a Salvation Army commander, had dreamed of an “Evangeline Residence” in New York City to complete the chain of similar residences for young business women across the country. Booth thought the financial difficulties were unsurpassable but one day mentioned her hopes of the venture to local philanthropist, John Markle. Mr. Markle saw the need for a residence such as this and simply asked “what will it cost, Commander?”
“A lot of money, Mr. Markle,” was Booth’s reply, “half a million dollars.”
“I will give it to you!” was the humanitarian’s quick reply and the seemingly insuperable obstacle melted into thin air.
Commander Booth and The Salvation Army were deeply grateful to Mr. John Markle for his support as we continue to be more than 85 years later where The Markle Evangeline Residence remains in the West Village to provide temporary homes for women working, studying or interning in New York City.
