As I write this review it has been 26 years since the Daily News left its flagship Art Deco offices. For me the attraction is not the building's exterior, which architect buffs will surely appreciate, no, it's the lobby. Over the course of 10 years I had three different jobs within a few blocks of the building and when I got stressed out, needed a break or was grabbing lunch I would often stop in just to stare at the massive turning globe in the lobby and let my mind wander. The last three years or so, unfortunately, the motor on the globe has been out of service and it no longer turns the globe. This is heartbreaking, as there was something special about standing in front of Australia and then watching it pass as the other continents slowly materialized. As a geography buff, I also enjoyed seeing some of the old names to countries that have never been updated or the slightly different color of paint on those that had been. Another feature that is a lot of fun are the distances to many of the world's major cities inlaid in the floor along their headings. And do not forget the distances and size comparisons to other stars that are just around the globe's base. These really help put distances into perspective and it can be astonishing for some to realize the calculations were made decades before the advent of what we consider modern computing. Enjoy and leave yourself a good 20 minutes at least to spend here.
Home of Superman’s Daily Planet inspiration for, at least. Publishers of the once great daily news. Bankrupt rag that it is, still houses a midtown must-see. Huge rotating globe surrounded by floor with brass rays showing direction and distance to the world’s notable cities. Great thing for kids too
Access limited to employees, no more access to the hall to take pictures. Too bad for this mythical hall of the Superman movies
Affiliated with my job, huge building, could easily get lost but vern nice building, mostly offices.
Someone was frying with that fire high. No ventilation is going, so it was uncomfortable, to say the least. But all in all, I got what I came for. I don't know if it's me, but the flavor/seasoning seems to be lacking in there food.
An old standard that's been updated to present day security levels, while maintaining the classic, historical facade. Although it has been some time since I have been there, you can never forget those brass rotating doors. A sight which is becoming more uncommon in any big city in the United States, and I think most of the world! A timeless representation of great architecture.
Since partners in care is in the same buliding, a lot more people have seen this lobby. I'm one of them. The staff was really helpful. I take it there might be tours that are given, but if they don't they should. Free please. Donations taken maybe.
It's a bldg with a nice lobby, where they filmed one of the Superman movies. What else can I say...
Always a cool office building
Good morning happy Tuesday 1st December, can't remember going into the building. Maybe just passbyhave a safe and blessed new month
