We came to DC for few days to help our daughter, who is going to school at GW, find a place to live. We were impressed with the service. Mr. JeLani was exceptionally professional, welcoming, warm and respectful. Also he was efficient and went out of his way to get the place ready. I haven't seen such type of service in a while. He is an asset. The front desk gentleman was also very nice. I wonder if this is just particular for Statesman apartment or the culture of DC in general. Thank you!!!!
Everyone who works at the Statesman is absolutely great. They have been so helpful and timely in responding to any issues I have. Courtney was amazing helping me get my apartment, and John and Tom have both been incredibly friendly and helped resolve my issues quickly.
One star for two nice daytime concierge John and Simba. Used to be okay to live but since last year it's been terrible--1. constant problems with backdoor, not fixed in weeks -- serious security concerns. 2. elevators take weeks to get fixed. 3. awful smells in the laundry room for months and no intent from managers to fix that. 4. current manager JeLani Walker is the most unprofessional person I've ever dealt with throughout my years of renting experience in the US -- adding to all previous unfixed problems are his pretentious and unprofessional emails that never solve problems 5. many residents including me have lost packages/food deliveries, and when seeking explanation you will get "we are never signing or responsible for any packages/deliveries", shame on the 24-hour mailroom/concierge service you are advertising and charging.
My stay with the Statesman is close to the end. I just wish to take this opportunity to thank every team member in this great community. Both the managing team and maintenance team are always committed to providing the best qualities of services to live in the Statesman. I appreciate that I could choose this community when I moved to DC. I may not remember everyone's name, Jelani, John, Davowa, Guy, Tommy, Andrew, and everyone, thank you very much!!
I have had a slew of minor maintenance issues recently, and I am consistently impressed by how quickly members of the team respond. Malik is always professional and friendly when he is in the apartment, and the entire maintenance team is great to work with. The front desk staff here are also amazing, and always very friendly when I am in the lobby or other common areas of the building.
I cannot begin to state how The Statesman Staff is one of the most professional teams I’ve encountered in DC! From the beginning to end.. impeccable, helpful & courteous! Communication with the management team, front door security staff & maintenance was always top notch! If you communicate in a timely kind manner… things get done! I would especially like to mention Davowa Minah Community Manager and John 24 hour security who make this place feel like home! They were available and quick to respond with exceptional care!!!!! The rooms are spacious, the location is perfect and everything was very clean. This is an excellent location for young professionals or GWU Students at an affordable price. High recommendations for this apartment complex!!!!!
I have lived in the Statesman for 2 years, and I have had back to back bad experiences--even on move-in day, being blocked in the loading dock by the concierge's own car. I first lived on the 1st floor, and I regularly experienced hostility from the concierges-I would receive nasty calls if my packages were not picked up immediatelyeven during the INSURRECTION I cancelled travelling back that day due to obvious reasons & I received calls being yelled at to get my packages delivered that day, I would wake up to loud TV being watched at the front desk at 3 am, and construction would occur at 7 AM or even earlier, one day elevators were being tested at 6 AM, which my unit was right next to, and I was not informed. I then moved to the 6th floor—when transferring, I was not allowed to move my boxes ahead of my lease date despite the unit being vacant & repainted. It needed to be "inspected" so I brought my stuff home for 3 weeks-when I moved in the toilet, dishwasher, & microwave were broken, displaying that the inspection never happened. The facade renovation continued despite convoluted emails that alluded to the project ending, lacking transparency—in the era of online school and wfh, I regularly was woken up before 8 AM to construction against the very external walls of my unit. This went on for months, making it impossible to work or attend class from home. The first summer in my unit, I travelled home for a few weeks and followed lease protocol regarding the AC unit. I returned to find a leak that seeped through the tiles of half of my unit. Some tiles had already been replaced due to a leak before I moved. Management was initially hostile, & although maintenance responded immediately they did not explain the oncoming process. Once I repeatedly asked for an explanation, I was told it would take weeks for the tiles to be replaced after they were all removed, and that I was liable since I was away & “didn’t notice the leak sooner”. I felt I was being talked down to given I am a young woman & a student, and that I wouldn’t know better when being held liable for something that not only wasn’t my fault, but occurred within lease protocol. I learned from others in the building that AC leaks & tile damages were very common due to the HVAC issues not being addressed, yet no one else ever faced charges. During this, the laundry room, lobby, and hallways all had leaks, with pieces of the wall & ceiling falling off to reveal black mold. I had to have multiple conversations with management to have the tiles replaced sooner it was a very simple project, my HVAC unit was never cleaned, the filter never replaced, and nothing was fixed within it other than stopping the leak shortterm. After a lengthy back and forth with my insurance & management I was not charged, but it was a ridiculous & unnecessary process. This summer, in using the AC again, I have regularly experienced “cold” symptoms for weeks, and then my AC leaked again. Maintenance came right away to stop the leak-when I asked for the AC to be cleaned as it was filled with black dust, filth, and muck, probably causing the leaks & my “cold” symptoms, they said they would come the next day, and that I did not need to file a maintenance request. My garbage disposal had also stopped working, and they said the same. Maintenance never returned, and I repeatedly called the concierge for days/weeks, & despite being told maintenance would return they never did. I filed a maintenance request, but received a response to it a week later while out of town. The laundry room has leaks again, construction lack transparency, and the cost of living is equal to other buildings with newer renovations and HVAC systems. I will be testing for mold despite my moving out soon. There is no care to fix longterm issues within the building, and a lack of priority for the wellbeing of tenants-just quick shortterm mitigations that don’t actually solve anything. I can’t get my AC cleaned out or properly fixed, but I get scolded by the concierge for accidentally locking myself out two days in a row.
The Statesman has a great staff and wonderful service. Whenever I need room maintenance the response is always timely, professional and efficient. Malik T. and Tommy J. Always go above and beyond to provide good and professional support. The front desk staff are all excellent as well. In particular, Nichole and Simba. Simba is the afternoon concierge and Nichole works nights. I can talk to both of them for hours with Simba always being comical and jovial. Nichole I would say I know best and is smart, knowledgeable and can be pretty funny as well.
UPDATE: Recently the parking garage was cleaned and the equipment leaked carbon monoxide into the building. Myself, and multiple residents got VERY sick and multiple people called the fire department. Manager Davowa was apparently supposed to immediately draft an email informing residents of the situation yet there was no notice of this issue until 2 FULL DAYS LATER. It is beyond unacceptable to not inform residents of an issue that is putting their health at risk, and frankly it shows that management does not care. I have lived here for a bit now, and there’s been a few ups and downs. First, everyone who works the front desk is incredibly nice. They are always available, will always answer questions or address concerns as best as they can. Maintenance requests are responded to very quickly and all workers are very polite. That being said, the company they use for parking is atrocious. The valets regularly overfill the garage making it impossible to pull out without them moving 3 cars, and even then there is constant worry about our car getting scratched. Every time we’ve had to ask the valet to assist in us in getting our car out, he gives attitude and acts like it’s our fault our car is stuck when we’re the ones paying $300 a month!! As for upper management, you have to really make a stink for them to actually reply. In my first 6 months of residency I was physically threatened by another resident. Management stated there was nothing they could do than give them a “warning” and when it escalated to the point that I filed a police report, it took them MONTHS to reply to the detective. The hallways regularly smell like an intense mix of cigarettes and weed to the point that we feel sick. After management sent passive emails for months to the building, they then accused us of being the source during their investigation! Overall the building is nice and updated, but know that any issues you do have, you’ll have to really fight to have them addressed.
Great maintenance service from Malik T. Timely, friendly, professional , and completely fixed the issues I needed fixed. Maintenance has worked in my apartment a couple times, and while I didn’t get their names, all of the maintenance staff that I’ve interacted with are also great.
