Love this tackle shop.  Not many like this one.  Just like the good old days when you’re needs and wants were fulfilled by personal service.  A must visit if you haven’t been before.

This kind of service and selection is very hard to find these days.  GO BUY HERE...YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.  

I am a total beginner fly fishing.  Decided it was time to make a leap and own a "good" setup.  I had already settled in on Orvis as my brand of choice.  So I went online, spoke to Orvis customer service, used the rod selector tool on their website, and everything pointed me to just about the same choice of equipment.  The nearest Orvis store is 45 minutes from my home, and Tochtermans's is about 20...so I figured it was worth a call to see if they had the product I wanted to buy.

On the phone I was guided to Rich, a fly fishing expert, and he more than dutifully answered all my kind of dumb and subjective "newb" questions.  It was his opinion that the fly combo that would work well for me was pretty well the same as what all my online research at Orvis had discovered.  But ultimately Rich suggested that I should come by the store and whip a couple of rods around.  "See how they feel in your hand and in action"  So I traveled into the city (which I kind of hate to do) and was pleasantly surprised that Tochterman's was in a decent neighborhood, had easy free parking, and was a pretty simple drive.

Rich greeted me quickly and made good on his word.  We took 4-5 rod combos out to the alley and made some casts.  I may not know anything about fly fishing, but I was able to tell what was NOT working for me.  Rich patiently guided me through the mechanics of a better casting technique and made some really non-pushy, non-judgmental suggestions.  He literally held my hand through the casting process.  And when he did not have his hands full with me, Rich could be seen rocking my kids baby seat as he was getting cranky.  We finished up and I wanted to try one more product that Tochterman's did not have on hand.  So they ordered one for me, no obligation or pressure.

After I had tried the one more rod setup, I was ready to buy one that I had tried that first day and not the special order item...which was no big deal to them.  Unfortunately Rich was not at work the day I was able to go pick up my new Orvis combo.  But his colleague Ian did a wonderful job setting me up with some crucial accessories and information.

Bottom line is.  We all really want instant gratification.  And I could have made some mouse clicks, or driven 25 minutes further and simply picked up what I thought was right for me.  Truthfully that would have gotten me pretty close...but I rest easy knowing that I got exactly the right product for my needs with the help at Tochterman's.  I also know where I can do for great advice and service...rather than being sort of "just another anonymous customer" online, or at the big chain store.  Thanks for the great store and service Tochterman's!!

Very knowledgeable staff. I have been coming in here for 35 years. This isn’t WalMart people. It’s a high end deluxe tackle shop for a true angler. It’s the Rolles Royce.
