Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

About

VMFA Arts is a top comprehensive US art museum with more than 5,000 years of art from around the world. VMFA is open 365 days a year and general admission is always free. The Wall Street Journal recently stated that VMFA is now a "two day museum."

Story

There's lots to see and do at VMFA, from special exhibitions, collections that span the globe and the history of creative achievement, two restaurants, a not-to-be-missed shop, talks and programs that make the art come alive, and so much more!

As of Oct 1, VMFA was certified as a Virginia Green attraction. What does that mean? It means we make recycling available, minimize the use of disposable food products and printed materials, reduce solid waste, use water efficiently, and conserve energy. But most importantly, it means we are always working harder to be better stewards of the environment. Don't forget to do your part!

You could spend all day wandering from exhibit to exhibit in this expansive museum. With a wide variety of collections (from classical ancient pottery to modern art and back again) there is something for everyone. The cafe is pretty good and prices are decent. The gift shop has a lot of interesting pieces, often tied to temporary exhibits like the recent display of ancient horse art. Worth the visit!

Something for everyone. Most exhibits are free, and there is quite a lot to take in without breaking the bank. They do have temporary visits that do cost money to see, most of which are well worth it. Decent happy hour on Fridays with lots of people as well and I have not been there yet, but I hear the fine dining restaurant atop the building is wonderful.

The VMFA is a great place to spend a day either alone or with family or friends. The art grabs your attention immediately as you walk down The Boulevard toward the entrance with a huge sculpture bust names 'Chloe'. Inside there are three floors are art to look at from ancient Egyptian to Modern Art. They also have a cafe where you can sit down inside or outside with a meal, a snack or just to grab a drink and reflect or talk with your companions about what you have seen. Richmond's Art museum is not as huge as some of the big cities so you can totally see it all in a morning or afternoon.

Awesome to come with the family. It is free to come in and they have not only have painted art but sculptures and vases as well. 3 floors full of art to see, and the food at their restaurant is amazing. Great service as well.

I love having the flexibility of a contributions-based entry fee. If there was a flat rate, I feel it may be prohibitive to folks on a tight budget. What a joy to be able to experience these amazing artworks! The outdoor sculptures are grand and in a setting that lends itself to gatherings and picnics. The interiors are a breathtaking collection of permanent and rotating exhibits. I adore the art nouveau collection and its carefully curated pieces. The furniture displays help provide context for the modern viewer. I love visiting the VMFA solo, with the ladies, or with my family! Highly recommended any time of year.
