Story

Luan Nguyen is a professional trainer that has consulted with more than 50 gyms across the country. He has seen what they do right, and corrected what they do wrong. And now he’s taking the best of those practices and putting them to work at Wheelhouse Academy.

David Morris brings a business background to Wheelhouse Academy, but don’t write him off as just a pencil-pusher. He’s long been in love with the notion that exercise can make you a better person in every way possible. Now, two of his favorite passions are blending together.



"We have been in the fitness industry since 2001 and realize that people often stop or never begin their fitness routine for many reasons.We’ve created a gym that prioritizes teaching you to move the right way, rather than just mindlessly getting you sweaty and sore. We feel that a gym culture should teach you how to balance the intensity of your workouts for maximum performance when you need it most. A culture that celebrates doing it correctly over heavier or faster.Gyms should be inclusive and provide positive energy all cultivated through the social support of the community and staff. With this aim, we have attracted a group of incredibly supportive members who lift each other up and empower one another one another to work harder."

I love this place. If you're looking for a gym with a community feel, look no further. People socialize with each other, the gym puts on community events, coaches are actively engaged with members, and more. The gym has a great location downtown and is a very clean facility. The equipment is great even learned about kilos! and the coaches are very knowledgeable and available for questions or help during your workout sessions. The class packages are very fair priced and class schedules are great. I will and have recommended to all my friends in the area. This gym accommodates beginners, amateurs, and enthusiasts all at once. There is no intimidation by competition with other members like other gyms. My only regret is not having joined sooner! 100/100
I spent 2 months in Birmingham and couldn't have chosen a better gym! Personal and professional approach of the founder and the trainers. They accepted me very quickly, there is very family and friendly atmosphere. I already remember the Wheelhouse fondly and miss it very much. The place where I felt at home, even though I was in a foreign city.
Awesome gym. Terrific people. Innovative programming. All the equipment you’ll need to further your personal fitness goals. Regardless of your level—from beginner to seasoned—do yourself a favor and give it a try.
Great gym with great instructors! The instructors take time to know you and your skill level. They help scale the workout while still pushing you! Hope to rejoin after some scheduling conflicts work themselves out.
Recently moved to the city and needed to find a gym due to me just having a baby and wanting to feel better, called WheelHouse academy and I was met with a very rude person who answered the phone with annoyance. Everyone has bad days so I did not think anything of it but when they continued to be rude and nonchalant about me inquiring I knew the gym was not going to be for me. Please take trainings on better customer service! Also they spoke about how this was a nudist gym and I was confused.. due to it not being on the site.
Love Wheelhouse Academy. The atmosphere is so positive. They instruct on all the proper positions and movements. And you can chose whether you want to do a HIIT class or a weights class.
Great space and decent equipment. For drop-ins: make sure you check the class schedule. You WILL be kicked out when a class starts despite any assurances they give you.
This is an amazing gym. Good programming and a great facility are table stakes but this team, led by Luan, takes it to the next level by prioritizing community, relationships, and a whole range of ancillary services PT, meal prep, mobility, etc. to make Wheelhouse not a good but a GREAT experience. Their people-centric model creates remarkable experiences for their gym members. They get my whole-hearted recommendation!
Wheelhouse is a wonderful environment. All. All of the trainers treat you like family and it's a great place to make friends with similar interests and goals within the community. Would highly recommend to anyone in any phase of their fitness and wellness journey.
