Wheels Museum

About

We are a volunteer run, non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve history, educate the public in the history of transportation, and provide our visitors with an opportunity to experience travel as it used to be.

Story

The WHEELS Museum Development Office is the administrative branch of the WHEELS Museum. The WHEELS Museum will be opened in phases as funds come in for each phase. We are dedicated to preserving Albuquerque's rich history as a railroad/steam engine site and include all forms of transportation in how Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Southwest grew with rapid advances in transportation. We are an all-volunteer agency working to restore the old Storage Warehouse building where the WHEELS Development Office is located.

Mission

The Wheels Museum Development Office is located on the site of the historic Santa Fe Railroad Shops in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. Built in 1914, the Albuquerque shops serviced steam locomotives operating on the Santa Fe Railroad.

The Wheels Museum will become an attraction to countless thousands of visitors while at the same time provide the citizens of Albuquerque and New Mexico with a new and exciting place to shop, enjoy a concert, have dinner and - most importantly - to re-visit and learn again about a very special part of their New Mexico heritage.

Wheels Museum board meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month and are open to the public. Please call Leba Freed at 505-243-6269 if you wish to attend in order to confirm the time and place.

The Wheels Museum is volunteer run and was such a treat! We visited a bunch museums and this sort of unofficial museum was, hands down, our favorite. The door was locked when we arrived I think by accident but they hurried to let us in when I called and welcomed us warmly. They let my 6yo run the little train we all rode on. Another volunteer gave him a little matchbox car to keep. There were tons of all sorts of antiques on wheels, and some not on wheels. I was amazed by the collection and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the volunteers. Don’t forget to stuff cash in their donation box. They truly deserve it.
This was an amazing find in Albuquerque while exploring the city! If you're into anything wheel related and enjoy being around others who are passionate and willing to take time to show you around, then make the trip. There is no charge, but support people who make an effort to support our city and drop a donation or at least a good review!
This place was simply amazing. So much to see and TOUCH! Yes touch. My two boys loved it and cried when it was time to leave. The volunteers were very happy and extremely helpful. We will be returning to visit. Truly a hidden gem in Albuquerque. The atmosphere and exhibits were so cool.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
A great experience for the whole family! A spectacular place of pure nostalgia. Everything wheels and some things that fly . Soon you will see my artwork in this museum. Make the time to see it you won't regret.

Amazing spot. The volunteer staff are all very friendly and happy to talk about anything in the museum. The collection is very eclectic but in a way that keeps you constantly interested. Beyond the various vehicles in all different sizes, from full size to 1/64 model, there are lots of cool books, magazines, and repair manuals. Highly recommend spending a few hours here.
It was exactly what I expected to see. The old photos and books gives you a picture back in time. The model railroad were very nice. We were the only ones in there and they turned the models on for us.
At the museum on business. Great history there, nostalgia, and wonderment. Looking forward to the continued growth of the museum. Support your local museums!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
