While visiting the Black Hills, make sure you visit this national park. While the park above ground is rich with animals and things to see, this park is best known for what is underground. Make sure to go in a ranger-guided tour to see the unique boxwork formation that is almost exclusively found in Wind Cave. Also learn the connection to the local active Americans and their oral traditions about the cave.

For me this was a chance visit while planning out a trip to the Dakotas to visit Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Parks. The draw is obviously to the cave and ranger led tours (well worth it; check on the park service’s web site for more times and ones being done), but there’s a lot of hiking trails to explore the grass and prairie lands up top. I stayed in Custer, but there’s many other towns around Mount Rushmore.

Accommodated our trail life troop so well. Ranger Ben was fabulous! Thank you for the lessons and jokes. We hope to come back!

Awesome Accidental Find. I have been to MANY national parks. How did I know nothing about this one? It was great! Fascinating information.

This was a very nice park make sure that you duck your head while in the cave ceilings are low. The cave offers very nice land features and goes on for miles.
