Yama Japanese Restaurant

Less than friendly and less than great tempura... We arrived at 1pm for lunch, and the place was very busy. This is no excuse for being unfriendly to brand new customers. The 30 seconds it takes to be friendly and courteous to a group of brand new customers saves a lot of grief later. Why would I be compelled to give a three star rating if the service had been polite and good? While I'd agree that Japanese food prepared by Japanese people should be way above average, the tempura I received was soggy and not even very warm. I really expected more after all the amazing reviews.

Yama is the best restaurant in Morgantown. Authentic, delicious, and iconic. It's a great place for a date, dinner with friends, or even to just grab a quick meal alone. Everyone working there is cheerful and genuine, and the owner/chef (Yama) is welcoming and humble. From the 30+ meals I've had there, none have ever been even remotely bad. I've never even been able to bring home leftovers, it's just too delicious.

This authentic Japanese restaurant may not look like much from the outside, but do not make the mistake of passing it up. Simply the best Japanese cuisine in the tri-state area (Ohio/WV/PA) and that includes Pittsburgh. My favorite is the eel bowl, and I come here as often as I can. Yama himself is a delight as well. No one outdoes Yama at what he does; come see for yourself. Be warned: it's addictive.

The only thing missing here are the tatami mats. This is a truly authentic Japanese restaurant. Don’t let the store front fool you! The food is delicious!

A local classic and favorite. The owner and staff are unbelievably friendly, the food is second to none, and although the restaurant is relatively small, it achieves homely and welcoming qualities that one is hard-pressed to get anywhere else. A true jewel, and a must-visit for anyone in Morgantown.
