Allis State Park

Description

Allis State Park is a state park in Brookfield, Vermont. Established in 1928, Allis State Park is the second state park to be created in Vermont. It is named for Wallace Allis, who willed his Bear Mountain Farm to the State of Vermont to be developed as a campground and recreational area. The park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) beginning in 1932, which built the access roads, constructed a picnic shelter, picnic grounds and a campground. There is a lookout tower on Bear Hill. Limited trash service, hot showers and running water are available. There are picnic tables, grills and fireplaces.Location and featuresAllis State Park encompasses 625acre of uplands in the watershed of Vermont's White River in western Brookfield, occupying part of a ridge bounded on the east by Bear Hill Road and the west by Vermont Route 12. Its principal feature is the summit of Bear Hill, which is accessed via the park road from Bear Hill Road. That road rises to the west before bending south, after which the road divides, providing access to a small campground on the right, and the picnic area and summit tower on the left. The camping loop has eighteen sites, some of which have leantos, with water and available from spigots and a single comfort station providing showers. The picnic area includes a large pavilion and restrooms. Trails connect the parts of the facility, and lead to the former fire lookout tower at the summit of the hill.HistoryThe park was created in 1928 by the gift of his farm to the people of Vermont by Wallace Allis. Prior to making the gift, Allis had allowed area residents to the upper areas of his farm, which provide spectactular views of the surrounding countryside. The park facilities were developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which constructed the access road, camping loop, and picnic pavilion. The park facilities were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

We stayed as a large group of 26 at the group site. It easily fits 5-6 large tents. Nice and flat, has one lean-to. Facilities in the park slightly outdated but fine. Nice, quiet and far from light and noise pollution.
We had a fun time at the storytelling event and were impressed with the actors! Maybe next time we'll venture up the fire tower.
Very well maintained rustic campground. Great views from the fire tower. Very close to Baker Pond which is great for canoe and kayak access.
A Vermont State Park hidden gem! Come for a quick hike, beautiful views from the fire tower, a picnic, or if you need to host a gathering- rent the pavilion! There is camping onsite as well. The fire tower has a lookout guide inside so you can really get a great idea of what you're looking at!
Very nice campground. Lots of privacy at the sites, clean facilities, friendly staff. Easy hike to a fire tower on the grounds. Be aware that the campground is somewhat remote with the nearest gas station roughly 10 minutes away. Cell service is spotty.
Nice little spot! Never heard of it before seeing a hike review of Bear Hill trail. A short but surprisingly nice hike down and back up the hill. No views on the trail but a fire tower at the park more than makes up for it.
Nice views from the fire tower. Also the hike is east and fun,
We drove on Rt 12 from Killington, What a beautiful scenic drive, absolutely gorgeous in the fall
Nice quiet setting. Plenty of room to enjoy the grounds. We were there for a day hike. Saw three groups having great fun. An active wiffleball game; group picnic and another group taking advantage of the views from the fire tower. My wife, daughter and dog enjoyed a quick lunch away from all the activities before a quick hike on the Bear Hill Trail. It's short, but steep decline to begin which means section of steep ascent to end. No one else on the trail which allowed our dog to run loose. Nice bathroom facilities. It would be worth checking out the overnight camping options. A nice state park off the beaten path.
We absolutely loved this little gem if a park! Already booked another trip!
