Vaccines For Your New Puppy Or Kitten
Just as in new babies, a puppy or kitten needs to be protected from viruses and bacteria that can harm their health now and in the years to come. We have outlined some of the vaccines that your new friend needs in order to have a long healthy life beside you.
Puppy Vaccines:
Canine Distemper: Canine distemper is highly contagious. It is passed rapidly through coughed or sneezed droplets of saliva. Young puppies, between the ages of 3-6 months are most susceptible and are most likely to die from it. Non-immunized adult dogs are also highly susceptible.
Bordetella: Bordetella is commonly referred to as “kennel cough” or bronchitis. When a dog coughs, the bacteria travels 20 feet spreading the organism. Do you and your dog ever: 1) go for walks? 2) cross paths with another dog? 3) go to the groomer? If you answered yes to any of these, then your new best buddy has probably been exposed to Bordetella.
Leptosporosis: Lepto is a disease that infects both animals and humans and is prevalent in Northwest Ohio. It may be transmitted through infected urine from squirrels, raccoons, deer and other assorted wildlife that is abundant in our area. Lepto infections in unprotected pets commonly leads to end stage kidney and/or liver failure and death.
Kitten Vaccines:
Feline Distemper: Feline distemper, also referred to as Panleukopenia, is widespread in nature, so all cats are exposed to it within their first year of life. It can be transmitted through feces, urine, food and water bowls, clothing, shoes, hands, bedding and litter boxes. It can also be transmitted from the mother to the developing kittens prior to birth.
Feline Leukemia Virus: FELV-infected cats are worldwide. Prevalence of infections varies greatly depending on their age, health and living conditions. It is shed in very high quantities in saliva and nasal secretions, urine, feces, and milk from infected cats. It can also be transmitted in mutual grooming, feeding dishes and from an infected mother to her kittens. Kittens are much more susceptible to infections, and therefore are at the greatest risk of infection if exposed. FELV is most prevalent in stray cats that fight. Is there any possibility that your cat could get outside, even for a few seconds and encounter the neighborhood cat? Or is there a cat that hisses through your screen? Remember there is no such thing as a strictly indoor cat.
