About

Food & Restaurant and Deli

Description

There are several dishes in the Italian kitchen that conjure up comfort, but two of them are the stars at a Bensenville deli that the Hungry Hound recently checked out.

He says they're both homemade, and obviously, a lot larger than their Italian cousins.

When you think arancini in Italy, you think of a small, bite-sized appetizer. As for lasagna, that's usually a Sunday-only, special occasion dish. But, in Bensenville, both items are not only available everyday. They're quite a bit larger than the versions you might see across the Atlantic.

The regulars know they're going to leave fairly stuffed, because at the Asti Italian Deli in Bensenville, portions are indeed ample.

"Arancini is actually an appetizer. I turned it into a meal. It's actually a Sicilian thing," said Mario De Astis, co-owner of Asti Deli.

But here, it becomes a bit more American, thanks to its size.

They start with cooked, long-grain rice, adding parmesan, eggs and parsley to it, before mixing it up by hand, to fully incorporate the flavors. Then, De Astis takes a large palm full, pressing it flat; he adds a cube of mozzarella and some ground beef, then covers it up with another handful of rice. Into some beaten eggs then a quick roll in fine bread crumbs, before hitting the deep fryer. At the table, it arrives in a pool of homemade ragu, with another container on the side.

"We use whole, plum tomatoes, we grind 'em up and make sauce from scratch; that's another item my mom taught me," De Astis said.

The size of the arancini ball pales in comparison to the heft of the lasagna slices, which are sold everyday, despite their traditional origins.

"It's more of a Sunday item, not a weekday item. In Italy, you have lasagna on Sunday only; it's something special," he said.

At Asti, it's a matter of layering. Homemade sheets of pasta come each day from Perfect Pasta in Addison, plus a few ladles of that homemade tomato sauce. Also, parmesan, mozzarella and fresh ricotta cheeses. One of the layers gets ground beef, but the others remain meatless.

The procedure is repeated at least four or five times, or until the top level of the baking pan is reached. Baked in the oven for about a half an hour, the lasagna is sliced into individual pieces, which could easily feed two.

"I always liked sitting with my mom, watching her make food and stuff, so she taught me how to make lasagna, how to take fresh ricotta, fresh mozzarella, and layer out with ground beef," said De Astis. "If you come during lunch, probably be prepared to sleep after that."

The deli does a lot of catering and carryout, but there is plenty of room in their newly expanded dining room to dine-in as well.

Wow umm wow. I'm sorry I'm lost for words. Absolutely one of the best Italian delis in the Chicago land area. Make sure you get there earlier the daily special sandwiches in the case sell out fast. Don't worry if they're sold out, there's plenty of other sandwiches that they can make you that are delicious.Food: 5/5
This place is such a great find! If you're looking for a neighborhood mom and pop deli, this is your place! I could literally eat here every week, twice a week! From their soups, to their sammies, to all their other options, you cannot go wrong. Each time I go, I always try to pick out a new entrée. The people here are wonderful. Go check them out! I'll probably be there munching on a sammy and some soup! Insider tip, order the Cream of chicken and rice soup and ask for some lemons! Squeeze those lemons in that soup, stir...and BAM, incredible! Do it! :D
I stopped at Asti today for the 1st time. I have heard this place is great but have never been in the area. Today, on my way home from Elk Grove FedEx, I stopped & I am so glad I did!! I have been sick for days & just wanted some homemade chicken soup. I stocked up for the week with 3 different soups, meatball sub, roast beef sub. The soups are so delicious & exactly what I had a taste for. Delicious broth, fresh crackers, delicious sub on great bread. I'll definitely be back again. Now that I know how great it is, it will be worth the 30 minute drive. A nice gentleman even loaded my big box in the car! Great food & service. Thanks Asti for your kindness & keeping Miss Dottie's Pound Cake going today!!
Delicious! Delicious! Their wedding soup is amazing! Love their Italian beef as well. Literally every sandwich & soup from here is incredible. The ladies working their are also so sweet & nice. Definitely recommend eating hereFood: 5/5
By far the best Italian Beef sandwich in a 60 mile radius, maybe even further than that. Their beef is slow cooked, add mozzarella and make it wet with peppers on top. Don’t be afraid of getting messy. I’ve also had the Italian cold cut sandwich and that’s top notch also. Go to Asti, you won’t be disappointed. I’ve been all over the US and this is right up there with something you’d get out of Philly.
Hidden gem. Their focaccia subs are to dir for..Food: 5/5
We had very quick service. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs by the time I was finished paying my food was done. It was about 12:30 on a thursday afternoon. My spaghetti was very good it came with Italian bread and butter.Food: 5/5
The food I ordered was great. I kept it simple with a soup and salad but the flavors were awesome. I had a Sicilian soup and a grilled chicken spinach salad. The dressing was delicious, the soup was full of flavor. The parking situation is tight during busy times. Also, I had a small group order and they failed to pack a sandwich. I had to return to pick it up and was a bit disappointed that nobody even apologized for their mistake. The food will definitely have me coming back though.
Love the place, friendly staff! Highly recommended.Food: 5/5
Quick lunch spot, very nice interior with plenty of seating. I got the Italian which was delicious and tasted very fresh, from the bread to all the ingredients. Will be back again.
