Came here one time as a teenager because I didn’t have a choice. Some nurses, therapists, other staff were nice. Some were terrible. Programming and treatment aren’t the best. The facility isn’t very nice. Food was okay. I liked the therapy dogs. This hospital honestly wasn’t that bad.
This facility is the best I’ve ever experienced. I did inpatient in 2018, IOP in Feb 2023, and now PHP in May 2023. I’ve gone inpatient and done IOP at other locations. Judging from those and asking around, THIS facility is where the care is!! All largely positive experiences. Yes, there will always be some staff who are less than exemplary, but the overwhelming majority are phenomenally kind and understanding. Special shoutout to Cassy in PHP for being one of the most enlightened/inspired healthcare professionals I’ve ever witnessed. I have a rare neuro disease that complicates my myriad of mental health conditions. For the for the first time since my diagnosis 6 years ago and seeing over 15 doctors and therapists since, a seasoned doctor at this hospital humbled himself enough to research it to provide better care for me. I cannot express my full gratitude. The system is far from perfect. We can thank our government and insurance systems for that. Also, yes, the quality of any given program also depends on the luck of the draw of the other patients in it with you. But, the staff here are some of best you’ll ever find anywhere - and I’ve been around the block! Don’t think twice. Come here.
Edit: got the paperwork back from the complaint and neither staff member got any repercussions for this. Literally nothing happened. Filed reports but they are asking me to keep silent about this and I will not stand for that, something needs to be done and I will do everything I can to have people see this. There is no more help out in the world. So sad. They caused more ptsd and hopelessness, what a loss for mental health in this world.
I went here a few years back now I was only 12. My stay was pretty difficult. While the night staff was okay and a few day staff were tolerable most pushed ideas on the kids that were not exactly helpful a lot of the time they would shame the kids for expressing their emotions or acting in atypical manners. I was really suicidal at the time having attempted dozens of times and when I was there I had open wounds on my arms and chest and wasn’t offered any bandages or medical help. The doctor/therapist seemed to want to put diagnoses on things and medicate without much reason. I have struggled with healing from trauma and opening up about it so I had often suffered from hallucinations of things I had experienced and the people who did things to me. One night I had told the staff I felt unsafe and was seeing things. They had me sit in an empty room that was filthy with dust crumb god knows what splashed on the wall and a blue mat on the floor. They called it the quiet room. I asked to leave the room and they denied. Along with this I am a trans man and during my time there I was misgendered and referred to and grouped with the girls there. My name for my room was put in quotation marks as if it wasn’t actually my name. Please take in consideration if you want to send your kid here how they might be treated some staff might be nice but the change in environment and added stress could end up being worse for them. Especially if your child is part of the lgbtqia+ community the staff was not trained at all with helping diverse people and some would make discriminatory comments. I hope staffing has gotten better now.
It's hard to rate this place. Some of the staff are legitimately nice, caring people. Just make sure you're seeing an actual Dr. The nurse practitioner are a joke and have no idea what they're doing. Scheduling here is completely and utterly flawed beyond belief. Until recently, I had been scheduled with a Dr just to wait months for the appointment, then get there just for them to tell me the person who scheduled the appointment made a mistake as they aren't taking patients for my issues. They're always overbooked because the people that actually run the place only care about money and booking as many appointments as possible even if they can not accommodate the amount of people they schedule. So, not only may to have to see a nurse practitioner rather than a REAL psychiatrist, but you'll probably be rushed in and out super quick because the spot is double-booked. It took me a too long to realize this myself, but you DO have the right to make decisions about your care, so keep stressing to them you want to see a real psychiatrist and they can get an appointment scheduled even if it's a few months out. Make sure you do it though because the nurse practitioners are a complete joke. They prescribe meds when they have NO idea what they are doing. When I started seeing an actual Dr they literally laughed and shook their heads because the treatment plan/medication changes by the NP were so ludicrous. It will become clear pretty quickly which people actually care about the patients so I recommend when you find one, you try to bring your issues to them and have them help you get set up with a Dr. you are comfortable with. Don't settle when it comes to your mental health like I did for so long. I just went along with whatever I was told and kept seeing whoever they sent me to even though I was not happy/getting proper care. That's obviously partially my own fault but it can be difficult when you're already in a vulnerable situation and you are assuming you can trust everyone here with your care. Sorry for the long review, but your mental health is so important, so I can't stress enough, be assertive and make sure you are 100% comfortable with the people in charge of your care and that they have your best interest in mind, not just cramming pills down your throat. Whether you have a good or bad experience here will completely depend on who is treating you as they have some truly great Dr's and therapists, but they also have some of the worst of the very WORST. So, If you are not 100% comfortable with your care, it is your RIGHT and also your responsibility to voice your concerns until you are set up with the proper care, don't settle if you get stuck with someone who doesn't care at all. Edit: I know this is already super long, I just wanted to say that most of the therapists for the partial hospitalization and outpatient programs are very kind and considerate, you will only be under their care very briefly though a few weeks tops so it's when you're working with them that I recommend you address any concerns and ask them to make sure you are set up with a GOOD Dr after moving on from their level of care. I keep adding to this just be I don't want to see anyone struggling when it isn't necessary, in fact it's plain wrong. I know first hand it can be hard, but make sure you are advocating for yourself and the BEST level of care!
They didn’t come in my room to ask me questions since they said I had Covid but I didn’t cause when I got dismissed I took one by the troopers and it came back negative they only came in for breakfast nd lunch and then they diagnosed me and dismissed me. And look at me now I don’t know how to cope with anxiety or depression
I went as a moral support person when dropping a friend off. I stayed with her the entire process, the staff was friendly, professional, and even clear in explaining the process. They made it so we both felt comfortable there. My husband always loved the Aurora Health Facilities, though I can not vouch for the care my friend has received or will receive there I can only vouch as her support person what I observed during the intake/assessment process and hope that she receives the appropriate amount of care while she is there.
My father was admitted here for substance abuse. After less than 24 hours, they discharged him and didn’t tell any family! They had him sit outside, no phone, no way of contacting anyone for a ride!!! What a liability! WHAT KIND OF PLACE IS THIS?! He was originally told he could bring his own pillow and blanket and then when he got admitted into a room, they went back on that statement and only gave him a thin hospital sheet and made us take home all of his belongings. I understand doing this for the safety of a psych patient, but my dad wasn’t that. And he was promised he could bring his own things!
I self admitted a few months ago. It was honestly slightly traumatizing looking back on it. The Dr. forced me to take meds I was uncomfortable with. She told me my friends and family didn’t care about me or my life because they were concerned about her prescribing me the highest dose of the med 8 days after I started it. She was always annoyed with me and my family and it made me very uncomfortable. Definitely made my anxiety worse. My group therapist made half of us very uncomfortable. He made a girl cry multiple times. He’d skip her because she had a harder time saying what she wanted to share with the group. He also told her to figure out her problems on her own. All we did every day was color, draw, play with slime and play card games. The only “skills” we learned were things like “take a shower, take a nap as long as it’s a healthy amount of time, punch a pillow, do a hobby.” None of it helped me. When I was done with my 2 weeks I didn’t receive any discharge plans. I was left with no therapist, no psychiatrist, no help with the meds that made me feel more numb than I felt before I came. I became more suicidal than I ever was before this place. My life became very dark. The only good thing about this place was this substitute therapist and the food. I think the therapist’s name was Kevante. He listened to what we had to say and helped us come up with solutions. Luckily I made the choice to try Roger’s Brown Deer. The DBT program absolutely saved my life. I know this is a lot to read but I had to share my experience with others. I would never allow a friend or family member to go here. Unless you have no other choice, please do not waste your time or money.
My son admitted, discharged worse then admitted, just prescribed multiple meds. Melissa ,only nurse that i would deem reputable ,and wonderful. Social workers,? No answer, staff answering phone ? Dont have a clue. Wait time 20 min and would give up. Some staff answering phone ,questionable if they had understanding, nor cared ,and just placed on hold. Last nurse i spoke with a total idiot regarding HIPPPA. If my son dies ,it will be your collective staff responsible for his death. Am presently pursuint, of legal action as well media exposure ,as to absoluter esponsibility , negligence, an apparent inaptitude to follow through a patients after care plan. Horrific. Had faith, hope, but absolutely squashed. How dare you release a patient while not stabilized wirh only multiple meds prescribed. Do.not expect anything from this corrupt, uncaring ,facility. Please feel free to comnent ,whence myself and media welcime you ,to have the opportunity to defend your practice and illiterate staff. Hope you have a good defense.... lol. Just because your Aurora doesnt mean a thing, all the easier to expose you. Remember to take all your anti depressants, sleep aids, anti seizure meds, etc. Might come in handy after you will be held responsible. Especially you iignorant, lazy social workers. And a nurse that hasnt the aptitude of customer service and communicates with half a brain. Thank you Melissa, only professional ,accomodating. The next one i spoke wirh? Where did she come ftom? Will await a response.....if my son suffers as he is now or dies......
