Austin County Jail Museum

About

The Historic Austin County Jail was built in 1896 at cost of $19,970, and was a functioning jail until 1982.

Description

Calling their old jail "unsafe, unfit, and inadequate," the Austin County Court contracted in 1896 with Pauly Jail Building Co. of St. Louis to erect this structure at cost of $19,970. Romanesque Revival style, with crenelated parapets, bartizans, and stone window arches harmonized with the 1886 courthouse, which later burned. The gallows, used only in 1901, have been removed; jailer's quarters have been enlarged; but original exterior is preserved. It was a functioning jail along with being the sheriff and his family's house until 1982. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1976

Amazing experience. This place was a lot cooler than I would've ever thought. I'm so glad my fiance and I visited last Saturday. It is one of the coolest places in Austin County. The first floor museum and second floor jail are open to public. Maybe one day the 3rd and 4th floor of the jail will be open. The 5th floor is a half floor mostly where the gallows hung. Our guides Lois and Bruce were so informative and super friendly. Make the Saturday trip!
Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The noose is still swinging in the old jail. Bill was so very knowledgeable about not just the jail but the whole Bellville area. I hope he takes the time to write his stories down!
Worth a visit. Open to all between 11 and 3 on Saturdays. Reservations are required at other times. Built in 1896, the prison cells are in levels 2 to 4, you can access level 2. Weapons used by the good, the bad and the ugly are showcased ;. Quite a bit on the history of the sheriff's that were in charge of Austin County.
A really cool old historic Texas jail. Tours are available and free on Saturdays. They do take donations. You can check out the jail cells on the second floor.
Tour lasted about an hour. Very fun and interesting. Good for kids and adults.
It is nice of the owner to treat us. It is only open on Saturday AM11:00-PM3:00 Please choose your time to visit
I was part of a group who toured the old county prison and was delightfully surprised at how much we all enjoyed it.

Bruce met us, to give the Jail Museum tour! We were absolutely amazed at the structure, the History and all who reigned over the Jail house!! Bruce was extremely knowledgeable of EVERY detail of the Jail House, as it was actually a part of his younger life! Not as a jailed criminal, but I don’t want to give away his interesting story!! You’ll have to schedule the tour with Bruce! It’s well worth your time!! I Highly Recommend!
A very interesting glimpse into a unique part of history. The docent was very knowledgeable and gave a fabulous tour. Our tour lasted about an hour, which was sufficient.
