Barbara's Fish Trap
"The Fishtrap Restaurant evolved from 10 years of catering parties, weddings, Farm Bureau dinners & Sunday buffets at the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society. The business moved into the building now housing Flavor Restaurant. In 1971, a complete kitchen was installed and that began seafood and Mexican take-out with a sit-down dining room upstairs. Barbara leased Hazel's Restaurant in 1978, changing the name to Paul and Barbara's Fishtrap. It was an immediate hit! Paul was the local harbormaster and after he died, it was renamed Barbara's Fishtrap.Barbara is grateful to her customers for the ongoing success that helped her purchase the almost 100-year-old building that Barbara's Fishtrap calls home. The Fishtrap success is attributed to our f"

We recently revisited Barbara's Fish Trap, a family-owned and operated seafood restaurant in Half Moon Bay. As usual, there was a line before the opening, but it didn't take too long to get seated. We ordered the corn fritters, mixed seafood linguine, and crab sandwiches. The corn fritters were a bit too sweet for my liking. The crab sandwiches were delicious and generous. The bread was a bit thick, but the crab filling was fresh and delicious. The mixed seafood linguine was also a good portion, but it was a bit oily for my taste. The service was just ok. Also, the restaurant gives a small discount if you pay cash. Overall, I would give Barbara's Fish Trap a 4-star. It's a great place to go for fresh, local seafood at a reasonable price.
I've been coming to this restaurant since I was little I'm 70 years old now. Back then it was called "Hazel's" and Hazel, who cooked everything would come out and talk to my grandparents, who knew her. She always had a greasy apron on. The fishing boats would pull right up to the restaurant with the catch of the day. The menu hasn't changed all that much. I had fish and chips as a boy and I had fish and chips at this visit. Excellent! I like the vinegar that's offered too. My side salad was very fresh and the dressing plentiful. This place has been a family tradition for over 65 years. The name's changed but the food quality and the atmosphere remain memorable. I've added the views of Half Moon Bay from the outdoor dining area. Kid-friendliness: There were a lot of people with children there. Mostly sitting outside. They have a reasonable children's menu. Parking: The parking lot is across the street and there's someone there who helped us find a spot to park. Excellent staff.
I don't think I'm too easy. But I do give plenty of 5 star reviews. Why only four here? Well, little charges here and there. Food was really good though the tartar sauce seemed like the mellowest I've had. Decent drink choice, nice server, beautiful location. But 4% card charge on top of the bill? note photos. And 5% for paper products if you do takeout? Yeesh. So a paper bag full of nothing but french fry orders will cost less than the paper for a bag filled with shrimp and scallop orders? 5% of the total bill, right? I don't know. Seems takeout orders take less staff time, less cleaning, occupy a table, etc.. In the friendliest way I suggest; bury the costs in your menu, Separating them can turn people off. Would I go again? Yeah, sure. It was a good experience overall. [I'll soon add the names of the food pics I've posted]
After checking out numerous 5-star reviews, I decided to visit. The service was notably friendly, although slightly slow. The food portions were generous and plentiful. The crab was a standout, being fresh and delicious. However, the fried fish didn't live up to the hype described by others—it tasted like ordinary fare. It's worth mentioning that there is a 4% card charge, but they do provide a notice beforehand to inform you.
To be honest, I don't understand why everyone gives 5 stars. We waited an hour to be seated at a table and then another 20 minutes for our food, despite the fact that it was ordered immediately. Only the horseradish sauce for fried seafood was special. Everything else is just normal. Add to that slow service and a card charge of 4% additionally to the check... For the three meals in the photo plus juice, water and tea $80. I cannot advise and we will not visit it again.
Waited about 40mins during lunch time on Saturday. Worth a wait for really fresh seafood! Takeout orders are available right by the front door as you can eat on outdoor benches. Inside the restaurant is smaller than I expected but really enjoyed cozy area with a great service! We had mini fish trap tempura. Loved the scallops and calamari
This was one of the first seafood restaurants I checked out when I first visited California some years ago. They have the best fish and chips that I’ve ever had. They also have some delicious deserts as well as their clam chowder, check it out, you won’t be disappointed. Unfortunately, I only had one picture of the beautiful sunset view from inside the restaurant. I’ll get more on my next visit. Hey, I added a few more photos, and I wanted to mention, the preferred method of payment is cash, it will save you like 3 or 4 percent for the card fee. I just made another trip to Barbara’s today, adding another photo. Also, check out their new hours before you go.
Takeout food is always good portion. Always a two person meal every time; perhaps a reason for the long line. But it's worth the wait as it moved fast. Sitting right next to a harbor and fishing pier, the places to hang out and eat were plenty. However, there appeared to be a homeless fat lady who looked dazed or drunk and was sleeping near the end of the bridge. People were always staring at her and she would be heard inaudibly something because I was sure if it were safe to be near that area. So I gave a three stars for the atmosphere. Would give five stars if the homeless were gone.
Stopped by this place for dinner since we were staying 2 minutes away. The food was OK, without any wow factor for being a seafood place. I expected a bit more. The place is not too big and gets crowded after 6-6:30pm The waitress we got was a bit slow to respond and had to be reminded couple of times about things we ordered and waited for, because she forgot, unlike the waiter that served the tables across from us and clearly was doing much better job for his guests. Another thing that you don’t see often is the added 4% “convenience” fee for using your credit card to pay. Kid-friendliness: Have some kids options on the menu. Inside is a bit tight and can be tough if you have a stroller. Parking: Have dedicated free parking lot for guests only.
I did hear great reviews, but I did not enjoy the food. I had more expectation for a place where the line is always long and is near by the ocean. Portions are good, pricey for fried food or sandwiches. Service is fast and friendly. Parking: Free parking spots in front of the restaurant. Just make sure to arrive early, after 1 p.m. will be more completed find a spot
