Barcelona (Portland Harbor) Light

Description

Barcelona Light, also known as Portland Harbor Light, is a lighthouse overlooking Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie in the Town of Westfield, New York.HistoryWestfield was once part of the Town of Portland and the natural harbor there was known as Portland Harbor. When the Town of Westfield was established formally in 1823, the harbor area became known as Barcelona. The lighthouse was established in 1829 through the efforts of Thomas B. Campbell. The conical tower and attached keeper's cottage were constructed of fieldstone, with a natural, emplaced foundation. The light was emitted by eleven lamps with 14in reflectors. It was the first lighthouse in the world to be powered by natural gas, which Campbell transported from a "burning spring" about a mile distant by means of wooden pipes. Thirty years later, in 1859, the lighthouse was deactivated, but it still stands lit today after over 100 years in private ownership, it is now owned by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.Historical information from Coast Guard siteCongress appropriated $5,000 on May 23, 1828, "for building a lighthouse at a proper site, at or near Portland, on Lake Erie, in the State of New York." The site was purchased for $50 and contract was made to erect a lighthouse and dwelling which cost $3,456.78. The first keeper appointed May 27, 1829, was Joshua Lane, a "deaf, superannuated clergyman, having numerous female dependents" whose salary was $350 per annum. The first light apparatus was described in the contract as 11 patent lamps with 11 14 inch reflectors and 2 spare lamps. There were double tin oil butts for of oil. No mention was made at that time of equipment for burning natural gas.

"Barcelona Lighthouse is operated by NYState Parks. The lighthouse was built in 1829 as the first natural gas lighthouse in the world. There is a small museum and gift shop housed in the keeper's cottage. The lighthouse is not open for ascent due to structural conditions. The grounds are open 24/7 year round."

An easy twenty minute drive from another nice lighthouse, Dunkirk lighthouse. Barcelona lighthouse is a stone built lighthouse first to use gas light. Unfortunately at this time, it is not possible to access the top due to closure pending stair replacement. State park workers indicated possibly this time next year the project will be completed. There is a simple gift shop as well as a nice small museum. Don’t forget to buy your lighthouse passport and collect the stamps as you visit the numerous lighthouses in the area. Parking is simple but limited. There are two shaded picnic benches out back.
Unexpected stop on our way home from Buffalo NY to Fishers IN. It was beautiful and the little museum next to the light house was very cool and educational. We will stop again when we can spend a day exploring. We really didn’t want to leave NY or this little slice of heaven. The sounds, air and the beauty of Lake Erie and the little lighthouse.
This charming lighthouse set next to Barcelona Harbor & Pier is a great place to visit! They are in the process of restoring the staircase and are selling t-shirts, sweatshirts and more to help raise the funds. 100% of the sales are invested in the lighthouse and I have a pretty bright blue t-shirt as a souvenir!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
As far as light house museum/information areas the Barcelona Lighthouse had the best one we found on our weekend lighthouse crawl. The lighthouse was under restoration so you couldn’t go up to the top. It is a beautiful stone lighthouse so unique from most that still exist today. Definitely recommend stopping by!
Very beautiful historic light house. Built 1828. Happened to bump into a Barcelona village native who told us it was owned by the federal government, then was privately owned and inhabited, and now is owned by NYS. Opens Memorial Day weekend to the public. A bit chilly today warm spring day with a breeze off Lake Erie. Worth the visit!
I noticed the surf on this windy gusty day and while photographing i noticed the lighthouse! I love lighthouses! I did not enter store, just walked around taking pictures!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entryFree
Cute, was closed when we visited. Lovely stop to overlook Lake Erie.Visited onWeekendReservation recommendedNot sure
I'm very partial as I work for state parks. However, this is an amazing site! The lighthouse is almost 200 years old and was the first lighthouse lit with natural gas in the world! Within the next year, we intend to get a capital project underway to stabilze and repair the tower so everyone can visit the top. There is so much history here. And the view of the harbor from the back porch is the reason many a local visits and watches birds and sunsets. There is a museum and gift shop in the cottage that is open 10-4 daily Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.
Beautiful lighthouse. There is work being done to restore and fix the stairs so people can ascend the lighthouse. The museum is small but with lots of information. Mary was wonderful, with knowledge, stories, and a great smile. If you love lighthouses, consider donating to help the restoration efforts.
