2023_08_19 We were in Holt and needed a place to eat on our way back to West Michigan. With Portland on our way and knowing Portland has a lot going for it I found Fabiano's River House Bar & Grille on Google Maps, well rated and looking like a good place to stop. It was everything we were wanting and we will work to stop again! The service was continually and friendly! The food was great! And the atmosphere was very nice. We were there late afternoon, during a time when we could walk in and grab a table, on the deck along the river. I would imagine that is not always the case as the deck is not huge. I estimate maybe 30-40 seats. There is a bar out there as well, with maybe 8 seats. There is also an interior portion of the restaurant and bar. Totally separate but apparently still the same. Sitting on the deck, being on the Looking Glass River, just south of where it meets the Grand River, is very nice. There is a nice park across the river with an adjacent bridge, for a nice after dinner walk. And Portland seems to have a nice downtown adjacent as well, although we got on our way and didn't spend any more time, other than driving through. Again we will work to go back.
We just had appetizers and a pizza. The pizza was the best. The pickle chips, bread sticks and pretzel were good as I’d expect. Our mixed drinks were very weak. Second one I ordered a double and couldn’t taste difference between that and a standard pour, maybe we just looked from out of town. Probably nice sitting outside in the summer but not sure I’d go back for drinks.
Service and atmosphere were great. Our server was super sweet and attentive. The food was good. We had an early dinner and I think we arrived at kitchen shift change because it felt like the kitchen wasn't ready for dinner just yet but still worth the stop.Food: 4/5
Had dinner around 6:30 on a Friday. Dined inside and there were only 4 other tables of people but it took 40 minutes to get our food though the server was friendly, enjoyable and fairly attentive once we got our food. As far as the food goes it was very good. Had a wet burrito one of the better ones I've had anywhere. Others in our party had the chicken fettucine alfredo which they enjoyed and the portion size was large and the other person had a bacon cheeseburger and fries which were described as "tasty". Drinks consisted of soda. Prices were a bit high but costs have went up everywhere and this was no better, no worse. Aside from the slower service my only major complaint would be the amount of flies inside. They were constantly buzzing around our food and when we looked up at the ceiling there were flies everywhere as in right above our table. Needless to say this really made it hard to enjoy our meal. Don't know what the answer is to address this but it'll be awhile before I return here or at the very least not until winter and the flies are gone. I'd give an overall rating of about 3.5 due to the slow service and flies. By itself the food was a 5.
A restaurant along the river in Portland, with an outdoor patio, and quaint decor indoors framed with hand hewn timbers and woodwork. A variety of dishes on the menu, including pizza and calzones, burgers, grinders and other sandwiches, up to steak or fish dinners. We enjoyed a nice lunch with several of the above items as our choices.
Has an incredible salad called the river house salad! Fabulous!! My companion had the summer salad. They were both huge, with lots of toppings not just lettuce. Highly recommend!Food: 5/5
We stopped in for breakfast to try someplace new. The service was pretty good, despite the kitchen being a bit slow for how not busy they were. If you drink coffee and enjoy flavored creamer, this is not the place for you. But the breakfast pizza was good - not greasy at all, and the sausage patties are rather large with good flavor. We will likely stop in again, but will have to bring our own creamer…
Cute little place overlooking the river. The sandwiches were really good!Food: 5/5
Being very generous with 4 stars but I felt like 3 was too low. Salad served in hot bowl, canned mushrooms on a 10 dollar burger, kids burger was extremely small even for my 5 year old. Server wears flip flops to work???? All you can eat fish your choice perch or cod.....oh wait at 6 on a Friday night they are already out of cod. There’s not many people here who ate all the cod. On further reflection I am reducing my rating to 3 stars now.
Hard to say which was worse- food or service. It was pretty clear the waitress didn’t like my husband from the minute she came to our table. She dropped the bill off at her half-attempt at checking on our food. When we went to pay, she selected 25% tip and said “if you want to leave something different, just back out of that” I now regret leaving a decent tip. The food was just really bad. We were passing through & it was the only joint open that early. That has to be the only reason they’re still in business.
