An old-fashioned country store serving local, fresh and made from scratch breakfast, lunch and meals to go, and a wide array of gifts and commodities.
Barefoot Country Store is an old fashioned general store located in historic Scottsville, Virginia. We are located in the Moore House, which is on the east side of Valley Street, between the James River Brewery and Doug's Maytag. You can expect to find local foods, beers and wine, as well as a menu with fresh daily meal options. You will see old fashioned displays of candy and toys, as well as river and camping equipment, gifts, personal care items, whole bean coffee and Scottsville souvenirs.
Hannah Moore's house was built in 1908 as a boarding house, around the time her previous home, which was located near where the Scottsville Reservoir is today, burned down. Miss Hannah was the center of Scottsville's social happenings, and also assisted other teachers in developing and teaching at the first public school in Albemarle County, located near Scottsville. Her boarding house was home to Willie Jean HIckok, another school teacher, and cousin to famous Wild Bill Hickok. The Moore house was also temporary home to the parents of the late Scottsville mayor, Raymond Thacker, and Raymond Thacker himself as a baby.
After Miss Hannah passed away, the Moore house changed hands many times, and was owned by several well known Scottsvillians. The Moore house was also home to a clan of mail order monkeys and macaws who stirred up all kinds of trouble in the streets of Scottsville.
Behind Miss Hannah's house sits a building roughly 100 years older, that served as a slave quarters and outdoor kitchen at one time. This is one of the oldest buildings in Scottsville.
The Shiffletts purchased the Moore House in early 2017 because they loved the look and feel of the property, and the stories it seems to tell. They became fascinated by Scottsville's history, and took personal interest in restoring the Moore house to its former glory. They were also inspired to open an old fashioned country store to bring back some of the history and stories of the area, and to provide a meeting ground for locals and visitors. The Shiffletts also have a farm in Keene, Barefoot Farm, and saw this store as an opportunity to offer their beef and pork for sale to the public, as well as other products from area farms.
