Barton Creek Greenbelt

Description

The Barton Creek Greenbelt located in Austin, Texas is managed by the City of Austin's Park and Recreation Department. The Greenbelt is a 7.25mi stretch of public land that begins at Zilker Park and stretches South/Southwest to the final section commonly referred to as "The Hill of Life" which ends in the Woods of Westlake subdivision. The Barton Creek Greenbelt consists of three areas: the Lower Greenbelt, the Upper Greenbelt and the Barton Creek Wilderness Park and is characterized by large limestone cliffs, dense foliage, and shallow bodies of water.ClimateLocated in Austin, Texas, the Barton Creek Greenbelt has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot summers and mild winters. The Greenbelt receives of rain, with the majority of the precipitation coming in the spring, and second-highest in the fall.3 Small bodies of water can be found at all times of the year throughout the Greenbelt, however the creek bed that runs along the spine of the Greenbelt actively flows only 1 to 2 months out of the year depending on precipitation levels. Watershed from Barton Creek, a tributary that feeds the Colorado River in Central Texas, is responsible for the area's highly concentrated vegetation.Sports and recreationWith its diverse terrain, the Greenbelt is a popular location for adventure-loving locals. The large limestone cliffs that line portions of the Greenbelt make for excellent rock climbing. Hikers and bikers can be found year round, although during the wet season mountain biking is more challenging as the biking trails crisscross the creek bed, making it difficult to cross when it is full. During years of heavy rainfall the water level of the creek rises high enough to allow swimming, cliff diving, kayaking, and tubing (recreation). During the annual "Tubin the Belt" parade hundreds of individuals tube the greenbelt on a Saturday in Spring.

Been doing hiking in this space for many years and it never disappoints. If you start at Barton Springs Pool the area runs along Barton creek to Ben White then to West Lake Hills. Some of the side trails are challenging and dangerous that run up and along the cliffs. The water in the creek can vary depending on how much recent rainfall. Make sure you bring plenty of water and proper hiking shoes for the journey. Restrooms: Restrooms can be found at Barton Springs pool and/or Barton Springs park at start of the trail but otherwise no bathrooms or drinking fountains along the trails.
Easy walking hike, lots of rocks and boring views for a while then see the creeks, beautiful and peaceful. Ensure to bring water! Parking was free and easy to find in the neighborhood during the weekend.
Beautiful hiking trail. Great views, and usually flowing water. Couple of simple and cool caves. Relatively busy, especially due to swimming holes. Watch out and listen for bikers on the skinny paths as well!
The climbing here was, at some point, very good. No matter what time of year, what temperature, what conditions, every route on every wall is a grease fest. Everything is slimy with years of sweaty hand residue from people here every day on every wall because access is SO easy. That being said, the routes are all still pretty on-grade, which means they feather bagged them originally, so it's fine. There are only a couple walls worth visiting if you climb hard. Be prepared to be surrounded by gumbies, muggles, and all sorts of the weather is good. Restrooms: Restroom is a nasty pit toilet which for a hygienic person should be a last resort.
Mark down is because it is a very busy trail and parking is on the side of an access road. Otherwise, very nice out and back trail along the River and some areas where people were swimming. Many with dogs off leash.
Such a beautiful hiking area. We did about 7 mile hike and the weather was perfect 70 degrees!
So many trees and such a beautiful green space. I even spotted a few birds, but not too many. There are many bridges for you to cross over each side of the trail. Photos taken by the Zilker Park side of Barton Creek.
My favorite hike/run/walk spot in Austin! Great for a swim when the creek is flowing. Do be careful of snakes! Restrooms: No restroom along the trail. Spyglass trailhead has thoms and tacodeli, or you can head to zilker entrance where there are restrooms by the pool. Dog-friendliness: People often have their dogs off leash, though technically it's not allowed.
Nature filled, beautiful and sportive trail for all ages ! Mix of everything - trees, creek, waterfalls ! The multiple waterfalls on the trail are very refreshing. You may also walk on the rocks in the middle of the creek. The trail path is paved but rough for buggies and fancy shoes! Suitable only for walking. The trail runs for few miles. Car parking is on the street side but it’s not with heavy traffic. Beware of not leaving valuables in the car.
It's alright? The rocks were cool I guess... I have lived in Austin my whole life, and it's my first time visiting the Barton Creek Greenbelt. I don't see what all the fuss is about. There was trash on the hike down and gray paint covered graffiti on the MoPac bridge. Maybe I went during the wrong time of year, but overall it's meh. You're not missing out on anything by not visiting.
