The wildness of the forest is magnificent! Patches of the dense evergreen and birch forest are completely carpeted with moss. The rangers are helpful and attentive. They are friendly ambassadors while also regulation enforcers. We were excited to get a parking space at Roaring Brook Day Use area for our hike to the peak of Katahdin. The Chimney Pond-Saddle Trail rated the least strenuous ascent was brutal. Actually, the descent was worse in the torrential thunderstorm. But the view from the peak was magnificent! Pit toilets at Roaring Brook Campground and Chimney Pond were clean, well equipped, and well maintained. There is no potable water but lots of running streams. Just remember to filter or boil before drinking. The people who work there do their best to keep the park a remote natural preserve. Thank you, Baxter Park Service!
I loved Baxter State Park! The drive is gorgeous, take your time and drive safe, the road is narrow and passing oncoming traffic can be challenging at some spots. I didn't have enough time to spend here, the park is large and every trail we walked was worth it's time. $16 per car for cars with out of state plates.
Absolutely Beautiful, worth the drive . It is Remote and mostly no cell coverage, but would love to come back Here again. We hiked to Sandy Stream Pond and were lucky enough to see a moose enjoying the water. To my knowledge there are no pets allowed so keep that in mind when planning your trip
This park was spectacular. We've spent the last several years in the West, and we were looking for somewhere in NE to camp and hike. I love some of the hikes out in Shenandoah, and the AT is great, but we hadn't found somewhere with the lakes, mountains, and wildlife -- and sense of wilderness -- that we were looking for. I'm sure there are more places out there, and everywhere has its own charms, but for now, Baxter fit the bill!
This place was amazing. Took the whole loop by car and the section that is all gravel should really only be ~20mph. Had a bear walk out in front of us and the views are breathtaking. Worth the trip for sure!
I didn’t actually make it to Baxter because I didn’t have the right vehicle. There are so many dirt roads and potholed bumpy roads that you absolutely need an off-roader or a high-sitting SUV just for piece of mind. I had a low sitting SUV and I didn't think my car would make it. So I turned around… and I saw a moose! This area is magnificent though. Peaceful, lots of wildlife, largely untouched and solitude solitude solitude. For a New Yorker tired of crowds, it was perfect! Generally this area in Aroostook county is like stepping back in time. People greet you as you pass by. No one locks their doors. The people are tough and polite. It was a nice experience of being left alone but also interacting with folks in a courteous polite manner. We dont get that in New York
Beautiful, quiet, bucolic...there are so many words to describe Baxter, but they won't do the park justice. Baxter is a well-maintained, rustic state park. Camping at Baxter has always been a pleasant experience - who can complain about slowing down and disconnecting from the world for a bit, especially in such a beautiful place. Keep in mind that Baxter is not pet-friendly. Also, whatever you bring in to Baxter, you must carry out. Every time I have been, people have been friendly, helpful and respectful of the rules and the park. Could not recommend enough. Restrooms: This is a RUSTIC experience. There are outhouses scattered throughout the park and campsites. Keep in mind that whatever you take in, you must take out. These are some of the nicest outhouses I've ever been in. Dog-friendliness: Baxter State Park does not allow animals.
Gorgeous, wild, remote. Alpine starts are only possible if you a have a camping reservation in the park the night prior and b are in the park prior to 830 the night before. Otherwise the gate closes and you wait until 6-7 AM with everyone else!
If your looking to get away from it all Baxter State Park is the place. We rented a cabin on Kidney pond. The cabin was perfect. A walk back in time when cell phones didn't exist and life was just simple. A propane fed wall lantern is your light source. No running water and no electricity and no potty or showers. There is a trench outhouse that is very well kept. Bring your own linens and anything else you think you will need. No stores exist. We cooked over the camp fire and it was one of the best camping dinners I have every enjoyed. The Cast Iron Stove kept us toasty warm we actually had to open the door. This is a very reverent place. I just don't know of any other way to describe it. Surrounded by nature and peace and quite we laid in our beds and listened to the Loon sing to us off and on all during the night. It was magical.
End of AT and highest peak in Maine. The knife edge trail is really beautiful and challenging, must go for hikers
