I hiked June 21st 2022. The weather was perfect and the trail was fun. It took me just over an hour to get up and about 45 minutes to get down
Bear Butte is Sacred Ground. This laccolith is not a butte, and it is the place where Crazy Horse chose his name.
We had a nice hike. Steep in areas.
Great hike and nice views, they also have Buffalo and an educational center.
Really beautiful trail. Our family - two adults and daughters 5, 7 and 10 - reached the summit. Took us about 3 hours total. My husband carried our five-year-old for small bits, but she held her own mostly! He packed up a picnic for the top - very enjoyable. It's a little tough but we were all very proud of our hike, and it is a great view and very solemn with the meaningfulness of the mountain to the indigenous people of the area. Beautiful.
This is a great easy to low moderate hike. The ascent and descent is around two hours including small rest breaks. The terrain starts with cut in wood support stairs, and later switches to more of a meandering chipped stone path as you near the top. The summit has great views of the surrounding area.
Great place ! The summit trail is amazing. It took us an hour to get to the top and then an hour down. I took a small back pack and 3 bottles of water. One hiking stick or a piece of wood helps .
Amazing views. Incredibly sacred to native American culture. Steep narrow hiking trail. Definitely stop at the educational center if its open. The staff there are wonderful and the artifacts they have are authentic and so insightful to understand the Native culture. The little video about the Butte they play is also very good info. Tips: This is a sacred place, like a church, so photos of all the prayer flags and bundles are not permitted and doing so is considered disrespectful. Also, they let me know that leaving behind or bringing up "new age" things like crystals should be avoided out of respect. If you feel inclined to do something "spiritual" while there, tabacco is what is recommended. As this is the natives most sacred plant medicine.
Fun for hiking Some parts a little strenuous
This is a very spiritual place. And it is said that when you leave here you will never be the same.It is so true. My husband and I were married here 20 years ago in August during Sturgis bike week. Best thing that ever happened to either one of us. We are still together and plan on renewing our vows this coming August. Does anyone know if the native American lady that worked at the information center doing weddings is still there? Or does anyone know her name? I can't seem to find her.
