This Before I Die Wall is proudly presented by
Crown Hill Cemetery & Crown Hill Heritage Foundation.
What better place to contemplate life than in a cemetery? Crown Hill Cemetery & Crown Hill Heritage Foundation are excited to sponsor and host this special inspirational artwork, where anyone can share his or her own personal aspirations. Our Before I Die Wall and Before I Die Tour (held on April 17) are two of the many activities featured in the I.U. School of Nursing’s Before I Die Festival, held April 15-17. Our wall will remain in place at least through mid-June and possibly longer! Even though we must erase the wall to make room for others to write, as time permits we plan to record as much of it as possible on this special Facebook Page to celebrate and share the important things written there.
Other BEFORE I DIE Walls
Before I Die walls are part of a global participatory public art project begun by artist Candy Chang after losing someone she loved and experiencing deep depression. After receiving permission she created an interactive wall on an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans. She painted it with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with a grid of the sentence, “Before I die I want to _____________.” Anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space. It was all an experiment and she didn’t know what to expect. By the next day, the wall was full of responses and it kept growing. After posting a few photos online, the images spread and she received hundreds of messages from people who wanted to make a wall with their community. She created a website with resources (see below) and now thanks to passionate people around the world, over 1,000 Before I Die walls have been created in over 35 languages and over 70 countries.
