Berkeley Food and Housing Project
"Since 1970, Insight Housing formerly Berkeley Food & Housing Project has envisioned a world where everyone has access to affordable housing and healthy food to eat. Every day, we advocate for and partner with individuals and families experiencing housing and food insecurity, because when everyone in our community has a place to call home and enough food to eat, we all benefit."

So I've been here almost 2 weeks at the insight shelter in Emeryville. I have had no one approach me about housing help or no one has helped me with information to get started with a housing search. I have no counselor to talk to about day to day issues. When I approach the director of the program to talk and get helpful ideas she's on her phone the whole five minutes she tries to offer me but she's answering text or she draws out what she needs to communicate on her office wall. My next issue was the bed begs I got this weekend July 3 2023. As facts remain a woman was brought in and she came from a hotel infested with bed bugs. She was placed in the bed I was giving first. But moved to the bed next to me due to roommate issues. That night I noticed a huge red spot on her leg near her knee before I went to bed. The next day for some strange reason the woman asked to be moved again. I moved in June 21st. I was bit a few times but never in the 3's like bed bug bites so I figured it was another type of bug since it's a shelter. So I ignored it and kept living. July 2nd I got 3 bites on my hand. My issue with the bed bugs was the unprofessionalism of staff handling the issue. My biggest problem was the evening of July 1st staff knew about the bed bug and left and went home knowing about the issue. It was one staff member who did her job and helped that whole day Sunday with the bed bug issue on her own, but it was drama and gossip. I just want others to know what is really going on her because this place needs to be ran through with a fine tooth comb due to all this unprofessionalism. The problem now this woman has moved beds in a shelter 3 times and none of her belongings are being washed and sprayed with bed bug repellant nor has her clothes been in a hot dryer either. I want to discuss other issues like no hot food until 6pm everyday, but honestly I don't think the bed bugs are gone yet!!!
Got denied housing at the " hope center " over my disability check being $44 too much !!! Thanks I'm STILL HOMELESS . " HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT ?!?! " YEAH ... OK. not if I'm on total disability and have 44 extra bucks ... Shouldn't that be ILLEGAL? and everyone's " subsidies " are $1600 dollars and they only pay $50 for rent ????? You guys are frauds.
Likely fine intent but poor performance in execution. Staff individuals seem hobbled by circumstance and/or management. At least one "supervisor" there can get WAY outa' line. All of which is likely why the "HUB" contract was lost and will be awarded to BACS, instead. Don't let that fool you, though, since BACS can be every bit as problematic. There have only been so many nonprofits working the local industry, so those are the ones that keep getting funding, contracts, etc all else aside
OMG these guys just found me out in the mide of nowhere. They were out looking for veterans. They said city hall told them they could find homeless people out here. Wow that is amazing. I changed my whole opinion of the Berkeley food and housing project. You made my day. Thank you.
Was hired for a position for housing navigator for Emeryville/Albany. Once hired, the position was nothing like the description I applied for. Management argued amongst each other and they were very disorganized and unprofessional; focused on my attire the whole time. I was not there even 3 weeks before HR let me know that I was not a "good fit", and what's worst, my supervisor or her supervisor did not come into work that day to let me know in person. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemies if I had any. This is by far the worst place that I have ever worked for.
A rare opportunity to directly feed needy people regularly with no prior experience and a foot in the door for those who really want to make a difference. A way for one to realize that a huge part of our community needs our help and that we are all the same people. It takes no time, no brains, not even one penny, just to spend a little time and show for these wonderful people and the rewards from getting to know them on a more personal level are great.
BFHP is an incredible organization. The staff is hardworking, thoughtful, caring, progressive, and well informed. They have a nearly impossible spread of tasks in front of them, and are continually pushing the envelope of what an organization should be able to offer those in need. They are ambitious, and I have been so impressed with their ability to connect with the local community to gain partners and support those in need. As we all know, all across our country the need is outweighing the funding by a large margin. BFHP is doing a commendable job trying to make an impact with as many folks in our local community as possible. If you want more, or if you want better- help fundraise! Donate! These people know how to make every dollar count.
Excellent facility -- humane service -- quality atmosphere
I've been staying at their men's shelter and this place seems like the common non profit joke. The staff at the men's shelter are unintelligent and immediately give an attitude before looking to see what is going on. For example on my first day I was told to show up at 5 pm. When I got here there were two staff members who no idea who I was or that anyone was supposed to come as new arrival. There was a short man who's name I think is Cliff who yelled at me for walking into the building and there was a short white women who would ask me questions and cut me off before I got a chance to give her any information. Eventually they told me they had no clue I was coming because THEY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO ACCESS "THE E-MAIL." A week later I came in from work at 2:30 a.m. and they told me it looks like I come and go when I want and that they don't think I have a job. I E-mailed one of the staff here my work schedule and somehow nobody knew I worked that night. Also, I checked in with the afternoon staff letting them know I work from 9-2pm. They care nothing about the people they house. The men's shelter looks like a county jail on the inside and serves as a place for wealthy white Christians to provide a variety of pork dishes, a little bit of Christianity, and a heap of Americana. This place is a jail simulation and I'm worried I've trapped myself in the industrial homeless complex.
BF&H is running much more efficiently and is doing a good job at getting resources and housing for people. I have met several helpful staff who go the extra mile for their clients. Thank you for the much improved services for the community !
