Only bridge with no traffic going into Philly. Usually well maintained & Perfect if you're looking to go experience hipster dumb and fishtown or the opioid crisis of America. Regardless, that bridge is always clean and ready to go for whatever brings you to Philly or to South jersey.
Quicker option to get right on or off on I-95, although right now there's a lot of construction going on, so it's not that much better at this time. When the construction is done, it should be much better.
Construction began in 1969, and was completed in 1974. However, the bridge did not open to traffic until April 30, 1976 due to numerous problems with the communities where the bridge's ramps to and from Richmond Street were located. The problems concerns over traffic, especially heavy trucks were also related to the highway route's planned extension to the northwest from the Delaware River, across Northeast Philadelphia to connect with the Roosevelt Expressway. The cancellation of this extension, the planned Pennsylvania Route 90 PA 90 - known as the Pulaski Expressway resulted in the so-called "Evel Knievel" ghost ramps – with unfinished bridges and fly-over ramps, some of which were later constructed to serve nearby Aramingo Avenue in the city's Bridesburg section. Currently, the route serves as a high-level multi-lane six lanes, separated by a concrete median barrier bypass of the three-lane Tacony-Palmyra Bridge, which has a drawbridge on the span. Construction in 1988 connected the bridge to New Jersey Route 90, allowing drivers to use Route 90 to access Route 73, rather than via U.S. Route 130.
I don’t know what your definition of a good bridge is, but the Betsy Ross Bridge certainly fits mine. 5 stars.
Always use this bridge just to get to my credit union in Cherry Hill. Very convenient and wish there were much more bridges between Northeast Philadelphia and New Jersey!
My go to bridge because there is never any traffic backed up on it.
As far as bridges go this is one is pretty cool and very enjoyable to drive over except the toll part. Viewing it from the side doesn’t do it justice, you have to go over to truly experience it. As you go over the bridge’s rise, and huge metal constructions start flying by overhead, it makes you consider just how many men, hours and tons of steel it all took.
On Friday June 26, 2020 I was crossing the Betsy Ross bridge around noon. I was part of a funeral procession. We had traveled from Wilmington Delaware up I95 and were headed to Cinnaminson for the burial. I wanted to thank the police officer who so kindly held the traffic back from the procession. I was last in line and when I looked in my rear view mirror it brought me to tears. Thank you for being so kind and thoughtful. Your actions were very much appreciated. Thank you for your service and please stay safe.
I watched this bridge being built, and it's sad to see it deteriorate. NJ side is not so bad, but the Pennsylvania side should require 4 wheel drive vehicles. The port authority collects your tolls and one has to wonder where that money goes because most certainly and quite apparently it does not budget for maintenance.
It’s always a clear ride. Never any traffic. Way better than the Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman. No bumps. Best bridge between NJ & PA.
