My family and I recently had the opportunity to visit Big Bend Ranch State Park, and although our initial plans to book an RV campsite were thwarted due to its newness, we decided to explore the park's other offerings. Despite the scorching heat reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit, we made the most of our time and had a memorable experience. We were initially disappointed to learn that RV spots were unavailable at Big Bend Ranch State Park, as well as at the neighboring Big Bend National Park. This made our accommodation search quite challenging. However, we didn't let this deter us from visiting the state park altogether. We opted to drive around and explore the park's Scenic Overlook areas and points of interest instead. Due to the extreme temperatures, it was not feasible for us to embark on the park's walking trails. Our family's safety was paramount, and we decided to exercise caution and refrain from engaging in strenuous physical activity. Nonetheless, we did manage to explore an old movie set near the Rio Grande River. This unique location allowed us to take some captivating photos and engage our children in a fun educational lesson about the border between Mexico and Texas. Continuing our drive, we ventured further and enjoyed breathtaking views from the Scenic Overlook. The natural beauty of the park left us in awe, and we couldn't help but appreciate the stunning landscapes that surrounded us. Although our visit lasted only about an hour, we were captivated by the park's beauty and potential for exploration. We intend to return when the weather is cooler to fully immerse ourselves in the park's walking trails and delve deeper into its wonders. Overall, Big Bend Ranch State Park left a positive impression on us. Despite the challenges of finding suitable camping options and the intense heat, the park's scenic beauty and the opportunity to experience the Rio Grande River firsthand made our visit worthwhile. We highly recommend planning a trip to this park, ensuring to choose a time when temperatures are more favorable for extensive exploration. Note: Due to our limited experience within the park and our inability to partake in all activities, we have assigned a rating of four stars. We anticipate that upon returning for a more extensive visit, our rating may be subject to change.
Stayed 10 days out in the wilderness here. Amazing. We went last November, the weather was perfect. Amazing night skies, and the hiking was phenomenal. Will be going back!
We were in the area to explore Big Bend National Park. I didn’t think we would get a chance to visit the state park this time. We booked a last minute raft on the Rio Grande, with Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company. They had an early afternoon raft at the Dark Canyon, at Big Bend Ranch State Park, and we decided to join the group. We had a great experience and made me want to go back to see more of the park. We were the only boats on the river and it was much quieter than the National Park. It was a unique experience to see the canyon from the river.
I kind of prefer this park over the national park...it had a river.. Plus it has zip lining...not the park park. But nearby.. I don't think this whole area is okay for dogs... There are rattle snakes...cactuses with sharp things on them...and there are cougars...aka mountain lions....we actually heard on at the national park
One of the best if not the best state park in Texas. An amazing alternative to the next-door national park with similar, yet different scenery at the same time. The main draw to big bend ranch sp is the extremely rugged desert landscapes. It's harsh, brutal and unforgiving here and definitely more of a challenge to explore than the national park. That's part of the appeal here, you are extremely unlikely to encounter more than a couple of people if any out on any of the extensive biking or hiking trails. There are several standout areas like closed canyon and the hoodoos along river road, however to get deep into the park requires a 4x4/high clearance vehicle. If you like very rugged desert landscapes like me, then this place will not disappoint. It has some of the most spectacular desert scenery in the world and it's honestly shocking to me that this place does not get more attention, a must-visit place during any west Texas trip!
No other State Park like it in Texas. It rivals the National Park in beauty but is more primitive and less touristy no sitting in a line of cars waiting to get anywhere. Beware, there are no good roads in the park. The roads range from bad to worse to paths that are only roads in the technical sense that they are on a map. And those are the roads that TPWD actually keeps up to some degree. The main park road is suitable for a rough ride in a 2WD, but anything off the main road should really be tried with a good 4WD. The unmaintained roads are only for experienced off-roaders. You can certainly see some fantastic scenery on a short visit, but to really appreciate the place demands a multi-day visit and some back country camping. There's so much to see but this park makes you work for it. Don't expect many amenities.
This is a huge state park with 300,000 acres, right next to Big Bend National Park, very nice views of the Rio Grande, of course , not like Santa Elena next door but beautiful geological formations and virtually nobody. I climbed the slopes of a few of the more remote mesas and it is possible that some of the places I reached were never touched by humans.
It was a beautiful, expressive trip as usual. The state park seems wilder than the national and more open to bringing your own unique experience of the wilderness to the fore. Our campsite was by the river and there were a couple of hiking sites we made it to in less than an hour that provided us with some good exertion. I would not choose a campsite so close to a main road next time, but the traffic died down around midnight and didn’t really become obtrusive again until daylight.
Big Bend is beautiful. Remote af. Get off grid. See the sky. Respect nature. Leave no trace.
The visitor center is neat. The roads are pretty rough though. A 4x4 with good clearance is a necessity.
