The library site was also the location of the Battle of Fort Stephenson, August 2, 1813. Col. George Croghan, the commander of the American forces, defended the supply fort against the British attack with a lone cannon, Old Betsy. Croghan Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in August. Birchard Public Library of Sandusky County was founded in 1874 by Rutherford B. Hayes and his uncle, Sardis Birchard, and serves the communities of Fremont, Gibsonburg, Green Springs and Woodville.
