We are a joint ministry of over twenty-five churches in Blacksburg of varying denominations. We are also supported by individuals, organizations and clubs.
The Interfaith Food Pantry (IFP) was founded on October 15, 1987 to serve families of Blacksburg and McCoy. The IFP is run entirely by volunteers. There are no paid staff members. All client needs are met through cash and food donations.
At its inception the IFP was open only one day a week and served 19 families in its first month. Blacksburg Baptist Church on Main Street hosted IFP for its first 25 years. Everyone that visited the Interfaith Food Pantry during its first 20 years was certain to have met its directors, Alice Wills or Frances Sterrett.
25 years later, the IFP now enjoys a newly constructed 10,000 square foot facility funded through donations from Dr. T. Marshall Hahn and other members of Blacksburg United Methodist Church. The IFP is now open five days a week and serves over 550 families per month. For the 2013 fiscal year end, IFP distributed over $145,000 of food to eligible clients.
The Interfaith Food Pantry is a program of New River Community Action, Inc. (NRCA). NRCA is a non-profit agency and qualified under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. NRCA is subject to an annual audit by independent certified public accountants. The tax identification number for NRCA is 54-0793072. The IFP is operated through the combined efforts of many people. Our current director is a familiar face to many, Fredda Cromer. Volunteers serve on a rotating schedule throughout the month.
